Laying the groundwork for the future

A new interview with lead Rockstar developers has shared how the technology the developer has been creating for GTA 6 will also help make the games that come after it release faster.

Speaking to Bloomberg, development heads Phil Hooker and Aaron Garburt "vow" the next Rockstar game will not take another eight years to make, as has been the gap between Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 6.

This is because the new tech created for GTA 6 and the team that was formed around it will carry over to the next project, and this consistency will bring the development time down. "The engine, the tools and the team we’ve built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly," added Hooker. "I feel confident that we can build on top of this and go more sideways than upwards to build more compelling content."

From the ground up, Rockstar changed a lot of its foundations throughout the making of GTA 6, according to Garburt, so it's "not going to rip it apart" and start all over again with whatever comes next.

As an aside, two new GTA 6 screenshots were also included in the Bloomberg article:

Attempting to explain why this particular development process has been such a long one, the executives describe multiple trips to Miami (which Vice City is based on) where they "rode with police to criminal hot spots, craned out of helicopters to snap aerial shots and weaved through crowds of scantily clad dancers at the hottest nightclubs in town — all so they could evaluate the lighting".

"And now you understand why it took so long," said head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe.

Much has been made of the gap in Rockstar's gaming resume, as it's been eight years between Red Dead Redemption 2 and next month's GTA 6. In the PS2 heyday, it had a new game every year, with Manhunt, Bully, and Midnight Club breaking up the GTA entries of III, Vice City, and San Andreas.

Such a release cadence in the modern games industry would be impossible — especially for a developer as meticulous as Rockstar — but it sounds like the technology going into GTA 6 will at least get it closer to that kind of consistency.

So, what comes after? GTA 7? Red Dead Redemption 3? L.A. Noire 2? Put your pick in the comments below.

Liam Croft

Liam grew up with a PlayStation controller in his hands and a love for Metal Gear Solid. Nowadays, he's found playing the latest and greatest PS5 games as well as supporting Derby County. That last detail is his downfall.
