Here we go again

I don't know about you, but I was already a bit concerned about the trajectory of Dragon Quest 12.

The long, long awaited title was reannounced back in May, having been completely reworked behind the scenes. And what we actually got to see wasn't massively exciting — especially since Square Enix basically admitted that the project was still far from finished.

But on top of this uncertainty, you've now got series creator Yuji Horii making... questionable comments about AI-developed games on social media.

The 72-year-old — a living legend of gaming — took to X (formerly Twitter) in order to express his excitement. He made a game in "about 30 minutes" using generative AI.

Said game is a largely text-based crime investigation sim, where you push a suspect to admit their guilt.

"It's truly astonishing," writes Horii, suggesting that the ease of the process is something to admire over the strains of traditional game development.

Horii isn't the first veteran Japanese game developer to draw this kind of attention. Father of Final Fantasy Hironobu Sakaguchi raised eyebrows when he highlighted a fan's completely AI-generated take on Final Fantasy 6, calling it "pretty awesome".

What's more, a recent industry survey shone a light on just how prevalent AI-assisted development is in Japan. It's apparently everywhere at this point.

Of course, none of this actually means that AI-generated stuff will find its way into Dragon Quest 12, but it's hard not to question the Horii's intentions, given how high up the chain of command he is.

What do you make of all this? Are you at all concerned for Dragon Quest 12? Manually generate some thoughts in the comments section below.

Robert Ramsey

Robert (or Rob if you're lazy) is an assistant editor of Push Square, and has been a fan of PlayStation since the 90s, when Tekken 2 introduced him to the incredible world of video games. He still takes his fighting games seriously, but RPGs are his true passion. The Witcher, Persona, Dragon Quest, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, Trails, Tales — he's played 'em all. A little too much, some might say.
