Rockstar Games has revealed that its next major game after Grand Theft Auto 6 should take significantly less time to develop. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Rockstar development heads Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut explained that the technology, tools, and teams established during GTA 6’s development will help the studio release future games faster.

The comments come ahead of GTA 6’s November 19, 2026, release, nearly eight years after Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in October 2018. While Rockstar has not announced its next project, the studio believes its recent investments will reduce the time needed to develop another major title.

Rockstar Expects Faster Game Development After GTA 6

During the interview, Hooker explained that much of the difficult groundwork required to develop GTA 6 has already been completed. Rather than rebuilding its technology for every new project, Rockstar intends to carry these improvements forward.

“The engine, the tools and the team we’ve built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly,” Hooker said.

Hooker also suggested that Rockstar could focus on creating different experiences rather than continually increasing the scale of its games.

“I feel confident that we can build on top of this and go more sideways than upwards to build more compelling content.”

Garbut reinforced this approach, explaining that GTA 6 required significant changes to Rockstar’s development technology.

“We foundationally changed a lot of stuff on this project. But now it’s done, and we’re not going to rip it apart.”

One example involves GTA 6’s NPC technology. Rockstar established and funded an additional studio during development to meet its requirements for non-playable characters. That team and its technology can now support future projects.

Garbut also highlighted the experience accumulated across Rockstar’s development teams, describing GTA 6 as the culmination of decades of shared knowledge.

What Will Rockstar Release After GTA 6?

Rockstar has not confirmed its next game or announced a release window. Whether the studio develops another Red Dead Redemption installment, a new Grand Theft Auto title, or an entirely different project remains unknown.

There is historical precedent for Rockstar reusing existing technology to accelerate development. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City launched in 2002, just one year after Grand Theft Auto 3, building upon its predecessor’s foundations.

However, the studio has not suggested that future releases will return to an annual schedule. Meanwhile, GTA 6 remains scheduled for November 19, featuring protagonists Jason and Lucia in Vice City and the surrounding state of Leonida.

Separate reports have suggested that GTA 6 could arrive on PC before the end of March 2027, citing four anonymous industry sources. Rockstar has not officially confirmed a PC version or its release date. For now, Rockstar’s comments indicate an intention to shorten future development cycles, although no specific timeline has been promised.
