Minecraft’s combat has always been fairly repetitive and, to put it bluntly, a little boring. While Mojang has introduced a few new weapons in recent years, real combat freaks have had to turn to mods to really spice things up. I’ve tried quite a few combat-focused mods, but I don’t think I’ve found any that rework Minecraft’s combat system as extensively as Soulbound, which turns the game into an Undertale and Deltarune-inspired turn-based RPG.

While modder Pixelcite released Soulbound around seven months ago, it really took off after its massive 2.0 update was released this week. Soulbound has now been downloaded a whopping 140,000 times on Minecraft modding platform Modrinth.

I played a few minutes of Soulbound, and it’s pretty neat. The mod wears its Deltarune and Undertale influences on its sleeve and can also be tweaked to look like Earthbound, but it also doesn’t just mindlessly throw these games inside of Minecraft. When creating my character, I had to actually allocate stats, select buffs, and choose between a few different combat styles. Once I spawned into the world, it just looked like Minecraft but with a few human enemies peppered throughout.  When I went to battle one, I was treated to original bullet-hell attack patterns with Deltarune’s combat system, and it all felt great to play!

Soulbound also lets you create dark worlds, which are essentially alternate dimensions in Deltarune. They manifest in Minecraft as procedurally generated worlds with various themes that you can actually set yourself. Here’s the wool-themed dark world that I made by stabbing the ground of my makeshift hut with a knife:

It would be easy to assume that a mod of this scale was developed with assistance from generative AI, but Soulbound apparently wasn’t, according to messages sent by moderators in Soulbound‘s Discord server. Modrinth, the platform it’s uploaded on, also requires users to disclose generative AI use. (I reached out to the lead developer for confirmation but did not receive a response.)

Soulbound’s runaway success comes hot on the heels of that terrible generative AI modding trend where everyone spent a week making vibe-coded mods that tossed Minecraft into Elden Ring and Skyrim. After reporting on that whole shebang (and having to play an incredibly tedious crossover mod in which Minecraft’s blocks barely worked at all), it’s really refreshing to get to play a mod that mashes two games up in a thoughtful way.
