We need to talk about beat em’ ups…
Resetera论坛网友发帖探讨清版动作游戏(beat 'em up),盘点《Captain Commando》《Streets of Rage 4》《TMNT: Shredder's Revenge》等近年作品并呼吁更多新作。
So here I am, playing Captain Commando in 2024, having an absolute fucking blast, and I'm thinking... when the fuck are we going to get more?
Now, don't get me wrong, there have been a lot of wonderful beat em' ups lately. SoR4, TMNT : Shredder's Revenge, and Double Dragon : Gaiden are incredible ones at that for instance. SoR4 is easily the best beat em' up behind maybe Final Fight.
But I'm talking:
Anything on the horizon?
Props to VinFTW, beat em' up OT in disguise. Only way it could be done.

It is always time to talk about beat 'em ups.
We need a new Captain America & the Avengers, X-Men, The Simpsons, Final Fight for starters.
Then we need to get back into licensing weird tonally dissonant properties that no one would associate with a beat 'em up.
We need a Breaking Bad beat 'em up where Walt and Jesse battle through the streets of New Mexico, fighting Gus in a giant robo-chicken and the like.
We need a Silent Hill beat 'em up where you can power up by finding a Pyramid Head mask after punching a garbage can.

River City Girls 1 & 2, Battletoads remake, and the Scott Pilgrim game also were released within the past decade. There's been a steady flow, the market just isn't flooded with them like metroidvanias and roguelites. I'm just hoping there will be more D&D / The King of Dragons style (i.e. RPG BEUs) coming at some point!
Also, a new X-Men beat 'em up is due at some point. Come on!
Would love to see The Bouncer make a comeback
Rita's Rewind looks like it'll be fun.
Also man, I played the hell out of the Fighting Force demo
Anything on the horizon?
The Punisher?

Not anytime soon thanks to Sony

I almost put this in the OT. Loved that game so much when it came out.
Rita's Rewind looks like it'll be fun.
Damn those 3D sections look amazing.
I've always wanted a Resident Evil beat 'em up, it would be soooo good

Really looking forward to playing this, I don't think I ever have.

Yeah it's looking real nice

Agreed for real. Even for the licensing that really line up with the genre there's still a ton of opportunity on the table. But we can and should go far beyond that and get crazy.
This genre is so underused and so fun to play. I know that it is almost impossible due to the background of vanillaware but I really wish I could replay dragon's crown on steam. Miss that game.
I see people mentioning the last Battletoads but that title was a mess halfway through a playthrough, completely ditching the beat em up part
Anyone that wants a dose of weird to go with their best em ups should check out Ninja Baseball Bat Man, that was a lot of fun to blast through with friends.
Pu Li Ru La is also a truly strange experience if you've already got the beat em up momentum! And I mean, truly strange.
Capcom Arcade Stadium 1 & 2 have a few beatemups. The Ninja Warriors Once Again is on steam.

There's tons in the indie space. Final vendatta is pretty good
A Beat Em Up based off Batman: Wayne Family Adventures. Is that something? Someone get on that.
Streets of Rage 4 re-ignited my love of the genre but I haven't played any of them since Golden Axe and SOR back in the day.

Me too! That game was awesome!
Does anyone know of any similar beat em ups with that style of progression?
Ive spent countless hours this year playing Spikeout thanks to Yakuza 8. Pretty much my idea of the perfect 3D beat em up template. Maybe gimme a dodge button and Id have 0 complaints. Its such a fun game, also helps its fairly big with plenty of different routes through it. Infinitely replayable.
On the other hand, I spent some time last week playing through Batman Forever: The Arcade Game which is a brawler, and its honestly terrible - in a "so bad its good" way - you have these ultra combos akin to KI or MK, silly and over the top but so darn handy to basically stun lock bosses when done right.
Also, a new X-Men beat 'em up is due at some point. Come on!
Not as long as Sony holds the license for X-Men games it aint. As excited as I am for Wolverine, Sony wont ever dare release a smaller, 2D arcade game. They'll make us wait a decade for X-Men instead... ;(
We might get lucky and get a port of the Konami game perhaps... assuming re-releasing that isnt tied to the Sony rights but Im not holding my breath.
I've always wanted a Resident Evil beat 'em up, it would be soooo good
Sega has Zombies Revenge for the Dreamcast... which is sorta a cross between a 3rd person action game, brawler and HOTD. Sadly I didnt think much to it.
The classic:
Castle Crashers® on Steam
Hack, slash, and smash your way to victory in this award winning 2D arcade adventure from The Behemoth!
store.steampowered.com
4-player beat-em-up-ish (there's special moves and stuff like that, as I recall). Feels more co-op focused:
Full Metal Furies on Steam
From the creators of Rogue Legacy comes a "true-cooperative" action RPG. FULL METAL FURIES puts an emphasis on team play with a unique combat system where everyone is important. Play on the couch, alone or with friends, or make it an online party for up to four players!

Of course:
Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara on Steam
Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara brings reworkings of two of Capcom’s classic arcade hits - Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom and Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara – together in one definitive digital package.

Kind of a moody open-world beat-em-up, Yakuza-style, I guess:
If we stretch the definition of "beat-em-up" a bit:
Streets of Rogue on Steam
Fight, sneak, and hack your way through randomly generated cities. It's like Nuclear Throne meets Deus Ex, mixed with the anarchy of GTA. Rogue-lite meets immersive sim, and goes completely insane.
store.steampowered.com
Fun beat-em-up with great art, but has some issues with incorrect / missing text for special moves / combos, as I recall:
River City Ransom: Underground on Steam
Alex and Ryan must take to the streets to help a new crop of fighters. You'll earn money, unlock moves, and upgrade your skills in a sprawling city. This modern take on an old classic features over 500 unique street fighting moves, dozens of weapons, and fun online multiplayer modes.

In a few months, they're releasing an overhaul for Phantom Breaker BattleGrounds:
Save 90% on Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Ultimate on Steam
"Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Ultimate" is a side-scrolling beat-'em-up with the heart of a fighting game, showcasing nostalgic pixel art and the latest cross-platform online multiplayer. Experience the biggest and most expansive entry in the "Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds" series to date!

Thanks SolarLune , added some of these to my steam wishlist!
only modern beat em up i enjoyed was the first river city girls. dont even know why, the sequel didnt feel as good to me, nor the other games (like the TMNT one that people like a lot). something just doesnt click with the new stuff, feels like theyre a bit ashamed of being "just" a beat'em'up and always want to include something else be rpg elements or too much branching paths or minigames like the new battletoads
Brawlers never really went away, they just "evolved/devolved" into different styles and then recently came back to the classic style through indies.
Brawlers became extremely intricate at one point; character action games are basically just intricate brawlers with some light RPG/action-adventure systems in them (Ninja Gaiden Black, DMC, Bayonetta, etc)
Then they became extremely simple with the Batman Arkham Asylum combat system (Batman games, Sleeping Dogs, Spiderman, etc).
Or the brawlers just adopted a ton of RPG-esque fiddling and cinematic storylines and became action RPGs (God of War, Witcher, etc). The brawler DNA is all over a lot of modern action adventure games.
So they never went away, they just specialized or hybridized into offshoots.
I almost put this in the OT. Loved that game so much when it came out.

Everytime I see threads about beat-em-ups it just surprises me that I am not the only one who absolutely loved this game while it was being reviled by a lot of people. The biggest issue I always had with this game was the loooong loading times, but everything else was just great. So yes, I would love a remaster of this, with great loading times, even better graphics (they were really good for the time!), and perhaps some more extras. Throw in a couple of Final Fantasy and/or Dragon Quest based costumes maybe.
Can definitely recommend River City Girls 1 and 2, btw. I also loved River City Ransom: Underground. Way more old-school than River City Girls, but definitely fun. I have to admit I couldn't really get into Fight'N Rage, and I also tried The Takeover, but they didn't click as well with me as some other beat-em-ups.

I personally don't see the connection here. A big part of brawlers is the arcade design. They still exist too.
Character action is more adventure. Melee mechanics are not unique to brawlers.

I'm not sure what to say. If you don't see the connection between Devil May Cry V and something like Fighting Force then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If you took all the cutscenes out of God of War 2018, it's basically Fighting Force with some menu fiddling.
Skinny & Franko: Fists of Violence on Steam
Brutal next chapter of Amiga's legendary beat'em up 'Franko: The Crazy Revenge' is here. It's time to clean the streets of shit. The iconic game finally gets a sequel it deserves. Are you ready? They are coming!

If you want something grimy and obscure, check out SKINNY & FRANKO: FISTS OF VIOLENCE.
It's also available on PSN and probably some other platforms.
I love beat-'em-ups.

I see the mechanics sure. But game essence? No. Mario 64 has brawler mechanics same with fighters but they're different games.
Rotwood from Klei is promising though its a rogue like and I think the areas are too small. More square arenas than conveyor belt level. It is in early access though so I'm hoping it is something they are building towards.
If you didn't play Streets of Rage 4, you are fucking up.

You are playing Kunio-style beat'em'ups which are heavy on RPG elements as they're channeling the old River City Ransom games. I personally don't like that style as it makes the initial playthrough really boring. Even River City Girls is extremely limited the first time through because you're slowly drip feeding moves. It really only came together on a new playthrough where you have everything unlocked.
Anybody know if there are any 3D beat em ups on the horizon? Feel like the closest I can get these days is Yakuza/Judgement.
Is this considered beat em up? It looks really good, but I rather wait for the full release.
Save 25% on Rotwood on Steam

This one looks great also.

Love beat'em ups. But it has to be good for it to work. Combat has to feel satisfying and the enemy and stage variety has to be there. There are so many lackluster ones out there. The upcoming G.I Joe Wrath of Cobra sadly is one of the bad ones.

Bad artstyle making every character look stubby and awkward with moves that makes it look like none of them has ever thrown a kick or a punch before in their life. It's like the artist has never seen anyone fight before. Mediocre gamelpay too and with the most overused stock punch sound effect you've ever heard doesn't help either. Such a wasted opportunity. It just seems very amateurish.
There's a demo on Steam if you want to se for yourself.
A good seldom talked about beat'em up is Violent Storm. Feels very good to play and has a fun Fist of the North Star/Mad Max'ish setting

While Final Fight of course is the classic I think Final Fight 3 is one of the best beat-em-ups out there.
Super Double Dragon and Double Dragon Advance came out not too long ago as re-releases and are worth a punt. I beat Advance, good beat 'em up.
Double Dragon Advance on Steam
The crown jewel of the Double Dragon series gets a highly anticipated revival! Experience familiar enemies and stages from throughout the series!

Double Dragon Gaiden is really good if you're a fan of the Shredder's Revenge style.

Plus there's the Capcom Bundle that came out which is excellent:

Sadly we only got a couple of revisions to Spikeout (with IW containing the best version from what I understand), plus Slashout which plays similarly, but with a setting change. Im told that one isnt as good but Ive only briefly played it, seemed ok.
Its frustrating that Sega basically nail the 3D brawler on their first try and then nothing ever really came close really after that. Fighting Force looks super janky and nowhere near as slick or smooth (but I never played it), though I did play Fighting Force 2 and that sucked so bad... Maybe Ill give the first one a try when the remaster is released.
Its not exactly a 3D scrolling brawler, but Urban Reign nails the combat (as expected since it leans heavily on Tekken). Really wish that'd get remastered as well...
Shenmue did have its moments (well, 2 did) where we got close to having this epic sprawling adventure with VF styled combat. Then 3 happened ;(
Yakuza kinda keeps it going though Id argue combat isnt quite as deep as Spikeout ever was, but LJ and Gaiden still lets you have plenty of fun with Tekken style juggle combos!

Such a good game. Amazing artstyle, soundtrack and really super solid feeling combat. The whole "pick up pig, turns into American Football" bit will never not crack me up.
Would love to see The Bouncer make a comeback
I very much would like to see a spiritual successor.
What beat em ups have combat on the same level as SoR4? I usually bounce off beat em ups but that one blew me away.
We seem to get a few Beat 'em Ups every year, so the genre is not COMPLETELY dead, but Bmups actually worth anyone's time are few and far between.
Still I think they're a really cool and nowadays underrated genre. Streets of Rage 2 and Final Fight are still a blast to play it's unbelievable. This is really a genre I feel peaked early in its life.
I'm also very glad The Ninja Warriors got so much attention recently. I randomly stumbled upon that game a few years back and I was surprised how good it was! I'm glad more and more people are finding out about it.

Guardians on the arcade comes to mind. Can bounce enemies around like ragdolls if you're good enough (I am not).

Dragon's Crown
Don't forget the recent goat
Pyro
God help us the mods are making weekend threads
It's been funny reading on here occasionally and listening to Jeff Gerstmann on his show say Fighting Force in particular was a bad beat 'em up. That was my first in the genre as a small kid and was fascinated by the idea of playing as multiple characters.
Only other beat 'em up I liked as a kid was The Bouncer, for stylistic reasons. I even bought a complete in box copy forever ago but have yet to pull out the PS2 to play (don't wanna emulate because of the pressure sensitive buttons being used for combos).
Otherwise I've hardly messed with the genre since. Friend and I went through Streets of Rage 4 (our first in the series) in one sitting a few years ago and liked it, but I think character action games were the next step I wanted and got for that type of game.

It depends on what you mean with combat on the level of Sor4.
If you mean satisfying combat and good variety in levels and enemies you can't really go wrong with any of Capcoms stuff (cadillacs & dinosaurs being a personal favorite) or the previously mentioned Violent storm or the snes version of turtles in time (arcade ver is vastly inferior.
I've always wanted a Resident Evil beat 'em up, it would be soooo good
Saw video's of a youtube fangame demo that was exactly that, i should look into that later
I've always wanted a Resident Evil beat 'em up, it would be soooo good
It's always seemed nuts to me that modern Capcom doesn't have a small team dedicated to retro throwbacks that utilize their franchises.
I made a thread a few years ago asking what beat'em ups people wanted re-released and era delivered great games. A lot of these are trapped on old hardware and might not see the light of day ever again. There's a ton in here that I never knew existed! This one in particular, Gaiapolis, came out in 1993!
