(Overwhelmingly positive reviews for the demo after nearly 2000 so far)

The game was originally on Itch.io, but is making the move to Steam as well, starting with the demo a few days ago. It has a surprisingly deep system of managing damage to each part of your body whilst also managing other stuff like food, water, infection, mood, fatigue and muscle strength, etc.

It's also a very difficult game. The demo lets you descend down 5 layers into the procedurally generated caves, but I've died about 10 times in 6 hours before getting past layer 2 (you restart from the top every time you die). You'll learn a lot by things spiraling horribly out of control because many things can go wrong. Unlike other games that would have a health bar that slowly goes to 0, you lose blood, get injuries, infections, and it can slowly get worse over time if you can't fix it; often to your doom.

It's a bleak descent with lots of dark themes, but it's satisfying learning by mistakes and getting better every time. It's a challenge that forces you to slow down, prepare, and be careful to avoid disaster.

I think this video review sells it pretty well:

For similar games as reference, the video above describes it basically as if Spelunky and Project Zomboid had a baby (that is evil and hates you).

Edit: I've also seen it compared to Rain world.

Think it is more of a mixture of Terraria and Project Zomboid rather than Spelunky.

I'll give it a try. I'm the type of person that like deep mechanics.

There is a fair bit of crafting like Terraria, although you have to juggle materials and items that deteriorate over time with limited inventory space. Gotta make some tough choices on what good items might have to be left behind instead of stacking tons of stuff like Terraria.

After giving the game some time. Yea, this is pretty good. I like the difficulty and kind of want a Terraria version of it too. Hate how cute the characters are though, actually become attached to em and put in a shit ton more effort to not let them become hurt compared to my random guy in Terraria, lol.

Yeah the Expies are so cute that there is already loads of art out there for them:

It kinda reminds me of an old quote about Tomb Raider 2013, but about something cute instead:

"When people play Lara, they don't really project themselves into the character... They're more like 'I want to protect her.' There's this sort of dynamic of 'I'm going to this adventure with her and trying to protect her."'

Old article

Like you said, it kinda creates an additional aspect where you feel like you want to protect the character.

Also, the recent 0.7 update added new graphics options and difficulty options that help make the game a bit more approachable because the default difficulty was / is still quite unforgiving.

Game reminds me a lot of Robinson's Requiem with the advanced medical simulation and "Everything trying to kill you" gameplay. Probably wasn't inspired by RR at all, but it's an interesting parallel, both games involve someone sent into an alien planet alone and pretty much butt naked in terms of gear, left for dead on a suicide mission, and they must scavenge and try to survive as well as escape.

The game releases on November 9 and has a new trailer:

Fittingly dark. Shows how badly wrong things can go and makes you not want to let that happen to your Expie on their journey to the bottom.

Having played the demo for over 100 hours, there was already a lot of meat to the game already, so I'm really looking forward to seeing all the new content, layers, and what's really waiting at the bottom that was worth so much misery for those poor Expies.

Since its release earlier this April, the demo has ranked among Steam's top 10 most played demos daily. Over 500,000 demo players have attempted a descent, with the game now sitting at 360,000 wishlists.

360k wishlists for an Indie game is very impressive, along with 500k players for a demo. I could see the game selling quite well.

It staying in the top 10-20 demos for concurrent players after 6 months is also a testament to the replayability.
