2026 has been a great year for gaming so far. We have received hits like Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata, and Pearl Abyss' single-player debut, Crimson Desert.
Crimson Desert was a massive success, and the developers have provided free regular updates for the players, including the game's enhanced edition.
With the upcoming "Charting The Unknown" DLC, the game is about to become more than an adventure across the mountains. New details have been revealed, and they're already causing a stir across the fan base.
Crimson Desert Is Going Underwater For Its Next Adventure
Crimson Desert: Charting The Unknown is scheduled to launch on October 29, 2026, and its newly revealed features give the game a surprisingly Subnautica flavor. The biggest addition in the upcoming DLC is the Ocean of Pywel, which can be explored both above and below the water. According to Pearl Abyss' official feature notice, the expansion now adds underwater traversal to the game, allowing players to visit sunken ruins across the ocean floor. With these ruins, new treasure chests, resources, and creatures are also making an appearance.
Being able to explore the ocean underwater with your pets really gives the game a Subnautica-esque feeling. Of course, these two games are vastly different from each other, but allowing the players to explore an underwater environment filled with mysteries gives Crimson Desert a unique dimension nobody had expected. A new, unique location means new mechanics that will be solely used for the underwater area.
The diving system comes with a plethora of survival elements. As soon as you dive underwater, an oxygen meter will appear, which can be extended by selecting the right equipment and suitable items, including diving suits that you can craft.
While it isn't quite the same as managing oxygen in stamina, it does give underwater exploration an additional thought before swimming towards the treasure chest. With this new equipment, new sea creatures are also making their way into the game—not as big and threatening as the Leviathan.
All the aforementioned mechanics are coming with the DLC, but you will be able to see how deep they go after it releases. Just the idea of exploring Pywel's ocean is terrifying, knowing how vast the world itself is and how the game puts an emphasis on exploration.
Pearl Abyss' Ambitious Title Enters Its Next Chapter On October 29
Exploring Pywel's Sea is just the tip of the iceberg in Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown. Additional story content for all three playable characters, Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane, is coming with the DLC, which can be started via the journal in the game's menu. However, these quests are only available after completing the main story, so we can expect some sort of closure to their stories.
Allowing the players to explore an underwater environment filled with mysteries gives Crimson Desert a unique dimension nobody had expected.
Alongside additional stories, you will be able to build your own ship and set sail across the Ocean of Pywel—available after completing an ocean-related storyline. And to build it, you will have to send your comrades on a ship-building dispatch mission at a port, or you can immediately buy it from a Fleet Office manager.
The content doesn't end here: the romance and marriage system, upgraded housing system, new Greymane castles, renting and managing businesses, and a new boss-rush mode are all arriving with the Charting the Unknown update. It's already looking extremely packed with content, even if the expansion's final scope will only become clear after the release.
Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown releases on October 29, 2026, on Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation, and PC. The DLC was originally supposed to release on October 15, but Pearl Abyss announced a delay to polish it.
Ultimately, the underwater exploration and all the other mechanics that are scheduled to arrive with the DLC will give the game a new sense of discovery, further developing its unique identity. It's definitely a plausible excuse to revisit Pywel, and after spending so much time in the mountains, you may just find out that the continent's most interesting secrets were hidden deep in the ocean.
