A Familiar Fantasy Reimagined In HD-2D
FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE asks an intriguing question: what might the series have looked like if its classic pixel-art roots had continued to evolve? The answer is a world built around detailed pixel characters, 3D environments and dynamic camera angles, giving familiar visual traditions a more cinematic edge.
The adventure follows a group of companions bound together by fate as they seek the truth behind a force threatening to bring everything to ruin. Along the way, players will encounter series staples including airships, crystals, espers and moogles, all woven into a new story.
It’s a blend of nostalgia and modern presentation, with the HD-2D approach aiming to make every location and dramatic moment feel more immediate without abandoning the visual style that helped define classic FINAL FANTASY.
Turn-Based Battles With A Resonant Twist
Combat remains rooted in tactical decision-making. Exploiting an enemy’s weaknesses can stagger them and break their defences, opening the door to extra turns and powerful Resonance attacks. Choosing when to press an advantage is key, with cinematic battles shaped by the decisions you make rather than simply the strength of your party.
One of the game’s central features is the ability to summon Visions – echoes of familiar FINAL FANTASY characters who join the fight with their own skills and abilities. These additions provide further options for party customisation, allowing players to shape their approach to combat around the strengths available to them.
There’s plenty to discover beyond the main adventure, too. Gilgamesh can be found wandering the world, while the Colosseum offers dangerous monster encounters with rewards to match. The Chamber of Arms holds formidable foes sealed within legendary weapons, and those looking for a major challenge can prepare for a showdown with Ultima Weapon.
Standard Or Deluxe – Which Edition Should You Choose?
The Standard Edition costs £49.99, while the £54.99 Digital Deluxe Edition bundles the base game with the Magitek & Grimoire Deluxe Pack.
The additional content includes a Magitek Armor Key to change your chocobo’s appearance, an Archwitch’s Grimoire that unlocks a certain character’s Fel Meteor Limit Burst, and useful items to help at the beginning of the journey.
The pack also includes a Mastery Ring, five Tents, five Mist Potions, five Mist Ethers, five Phoenix Downs and three Remedies. For a £5 difference, the Deluxe Edition provides a selection of extra equipment and consumables alongside its cosmetic and ability-related bonuses.
FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE brings together classic series ingredients, strategic turn-based combat and a fresh HD-2D presentation. With its roster of Visions, optional challenges and secrets scattered throughout the world, there’s plenty to investigate beyond the main story.
Whether you’re returning for the familiar fantasy or discovering this style of adventure for the first time, the journey offers another opportunity to see how far the series’ pixel-art legacy can go.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore. Gamertag is neil363, feel free to add me to your list.
