Zenith is live today, free for every owner

Starting October 19, the Saros: Zenith update is available to all Saros owners at no additional charge. In a post on PlayStation.Blog, Abebe Tinari, Saros: Zenith Design Lead at Housemarque, said the studio built the update around two goals: add replayability for players who had already pushed deep into Carcosa, and make the game more accessible so more people can discover its bullet ballet combat.

Saros, Housemarque’s PS5 exclusive roguelike shooter and follow-up to Returnal, puts Arjun Devraj on the planet Carcosa. The post calls Saros one of the highest rated action games of 2026, and Zenith arrives after players have already spent time plumbing the depths of that world. The update bundles a boss rush mode, a New Game+ layer system, new gameplay modifiers, trophies, and a set of accessibility controls.

Housemarque split the update into two directions. New accessibility controls and 10 Protection Modifiers lower the floor for struggling players. 10 Trial Modifiers, Eclipse Layers, and Overlord Rush raise the ceiling and give veterans a build-your-own-difficulty endgame with scored competition.

Accessibility controls keep the projectiles but slow the clock

Housemarque’s design goal is the satisfaction of facing down a difficult challenge and then overcoming it. The studio has been cautious about adjusting difficulty by cutting the spectacular attacks that produce those challenges, so Slow Game Speed leaves the projectiles in place and changes the clock instead. When the setting is enabled, the game slows down to give players more time to read enemy attack telegraphs, see the bullets as they fly, and decide whether to Jump, Dash, Shield, or Parry. Players control how much the game slows down and can choose for the slowdown to trigger automatically in combat or only when toggled manually.

Auto-fire makes the weapon fire automatically while Arjun aims at an enemy. Housemarque added it because some players find it difficult to hold a button down for extended periods. The post’s main piece of advice to Saros players is to keep moving, and after moving, shooting is the action they perform most. The setting removes one input from combat, but a perfect reload still requires a well-timed button press. The feature is meant to make the game more accessible without removing opportunities for skill expression. Motion Sensor Aiming and existing button remapping now join those options.

  • Slow Game Speed: slows the game during combat, with player-set intensity and automatic or manual activation.
  • Auto-fire: fires automatically while aiming at an enemy; reload timing remains manual.
  • Motion Sensor Aiming: adds motion-based aim control.
  • Button remapping: existing customization now combines with the new settings.

None of the new settings change how many projectiles an enemy fires. Housemarque treats attack volume and reaction time as separate problems, which is why Slow Game Speed works like a playback speed control. A player stuck on a specific Overlord pattern can slow the game to learn the telegraph, then return to full speed for the real run. Housemarque has said it wants to follow FromSoftware’s path, and the new settings add options without changing enemy attacks.

Twenty new Carcosan Modifiers push difficulty both ways

Saros already had a Carcosan Modifier system that let players tune the world. Zenith adds 20 new Carcosan Modifiers to it. The update adds 10 Protection Modifiers that make Carcosa easier and more forgiving. Corruption Melee Enhancement is one of them. Corruption normally builds on Arjun’s armor after certain projectiles hit, eating away maximum Integrity. With the Modifier active, built-up Corruption becomes an offensive resource. When a melee strike connects, the Corruption is consumed and converted into additional damage for a single devastating hit. The risk still exists, but the Modifier rewards close-range aggression over retreat.

The update also adds 10 Trial Modifiers that increase challenge. Hostile Regeneration is one of the trickier examples. Larger enemies can be stunned by weapon damage, but they will quickly regenerate and recover. Only a melee strike finishes them off, so the player has to rush in and land the fatal blow before the enemy resets. The change forces movement and timing, two skills Saros already rewards.

The three levers change different parts of the fight. Accessibility alters timing and inputs, Protections soften specific enemy mechanics, and Trials change how enemies die. A player can tilt the same Carcosa easier or harder before a run begins.

Eclipse Layers turn higher difficulty into a New Game+ system

Eclipse Layers is the update’s New Game+ mode. After clearing Saros, mysterious new nodes are added to the Armor Matrix back at Passage. These nodes unlock the gate to the next Eclipse Layer, a more intense version of the game with altered rules. When a player moves to a new Eclipse Layer, the first action is selecting a loadout of Carcosan Modifiers. A certain threshold of Carcosan Modifiers must be met before the layer can begin, and it takes multiple Trial Modifiers to reach that goal.

Which Trials they choose is up to them, and there are 25 to pick from. Certain combinations of Trials can synergize into deadly setups, so the loadout screen is a strategic decision. The loadout is chosen before the layer begins, which means a player commits to their difficulty for the whole run.

The post did not list the specific altered rules for each Eclipse Layer.

The Crown gates 12 Visions and unlocks hidden story texts

To make that risk visible, Arjun dons a Crown during Eclipse Layers and his armor glows golden. The more Trials a player takes, and the higher the Modifier Balance goes, the bigger and more splendid the Crown becomes. The Crown reveals a new collectible called Visions, murals and messages etched into stone by an ancient king. Twelve Visions are hidden across Carcosa, and higher levels of the Crown are required to perceive additional story texts inside them.

Players who opt into harder Eclipse Layers get more story content, and the Crown’s growth is the visible meter for that progression, so the modifier a player takes determines how much story text they can perceive. Housemarque is inviting players to share Crown-equipped Photo mode snaps. Overlord Rush adds a timed boss rush and per-weapon leaderboards

Overlord Rush, accessed through the Primary Unit in Passage, sends Arjun into an intense training simulation that races players through the game’s Overlords. Scores go to an integrated leaderboard where friends and players around the world can compete. The mode is split into multiple Sets. Incursion and Ascension each contain three Overlords and can be completed in about 10 minutes, which the post calls a nice little Saros snack. Totality runs all eight Overlords from around Carcosa in one continuous run.

The leaderboard can be filtered by Main Weapon, so a player can chase mastery with a favorite weapon even when the top of the global list stays out of reach. Players need an internet connection and a PlayStation account to use the online leaderboard.

What Zenith confirms and what remains open

Housemarque did not release a trophy list with the update, so the exact trophy additions remain unknown. The studio also did not say whether Eclipse Layer rule changes, modifier thresholds, or Overlord Rush leaderboards will receive balance adjustments later.
