Dota 2 legend Dendi has revisited his famous showdown against OpenAI’s bot at The International 2017, joking that a different result might have changed the world. Years before AI became part of everyday conversations, he faced an OpenAI opponent on one of esports’ biggest stages and lost.

Now, Dendi is having some fun with that defeat. Sharing footage of the match, he suggested that he once had a chance to stop the AI era before it took off.

In brief:

  • Dendi shared a throwback to his match against OpenAI’s Dota 2 bot at TI 2017.
  • He joked that beating the bot could have left the world looking very different.
  • OpenAI won the 1v1 exhibition 2–0 on August 11, 2017.

In his post on X, Dendi leaned into the idea that his defeat was the moment everything started.

“Apparently this is where the AI era started 😅
If I had beaten that bot in 2017, maybe the world would be a very different place now

I had a chance to stop AI, but …”

It’s a playful way to look back at a match that has gained a very different meaning over the years. Back then, the immediate attraction was watching a machine challenge one of Dota 2’s most recognizable players.

The post also gives fans an easy setup for teasing Dendi about failing to save humanity from AI. His own caption embraces that joke, turning a showmatch defeat into an imagined turning point for the entire world.

The exhibition took place on August 11, 2017, during The International. Dendi, already a former world champion and a crowd favorite, faced OpenAI’s bot in a 1v1 contest. It was a 2–0 victory for the bot.

Both sides played Shadow Fiend, putting the focus on mid-lane mechanics, positioning, and trading attacks. The exhibition used a narrower format than Dota 2’s full five-player team matches.

OpenAI said its bot learned through self-play. It had also beaten other leading professionals, including Arteezy and SumaiL, before its appearance against Dendi. The demonstration showed how far that approach could go in a competitive game.
