BeamNG.drive is returning to its racing glory with the new v0.40 update coming to Steam and a launch for PlayStation 5. It’s finally time to break friendships via a local split-screen and race through the open-world campaigns, Career Mode, and other tricks.

Starting today, PlayStation 5 drivers will be able to push their vehicles to the digital limits as their Steam counterparts have been doing already. BeamNG.drive has been a popular choice on Steam in the sim racing world, especially among players with racing peripherals. It was only a matter of time before BeamNG.drive made its console debut.

With BeamNG.drive crashing into PlayStation 5, the version will launch with FSR 3 support on the regular PS5 and PSSR support on the PS5 Pro. The new update will have an additional car, local split-screen support, and many other upgrades.

BeamNG's Soft-Body Physics Engine

The car crashes are popular among fans of BeamNG, making a bad decision or a fatal turn visually appealing and very physically accurate.

BeamNG.drive’s soft body physics engine is the driving force behind the detailed crashes, as it is made using nodes (mass points, particles) and beams (springs that hold the nodes together). Most car games use the rigid body structure, while BeamNG.drive opts for the node-beam structure.

This makes the cars and trucks easier to deform realistically, as the structure is made to resemble something close to skeletons or the magnetic toys that were everywhere in the 2000s. The game’s crash mechanics are as accurate and realistic as one can be about vehicle damage.

When it comes to vehicles, BeamNG.drive is well ahead of most competitors, with its mix-and-match parts letting you build the vehicle of your choice from tiny cars to huge trucks.

There’s a lot of road to cover and discover as your journey continues. There are 12 open-world environments to enjoy and take in with your choice of vehicle for the day. All of the choices have their own varied terrain to drive through. Drive through tropical jungle passages, barren deserts, urban streets, crash in fast highways and others.

The game’s crash mechanics are as accurate and realistic as one can be about vehicle damage.

If you feel like you need more of a challenge, there’s also a Career Mode to run through different tasks and obstacles as you progress from a beaten-up truck to a fleet of luxury cars.

Many choices of game scenarios are offered in-game to complete different truck delivery requests where you need top speed, plots where you need to outrun police cars chasing you down, or just do time trials to beat records. With all these quests to choose from, the physics engine will accommodate and keep you up to speed.

While BeamNG.drive has plenty of mods to choose from on Steam with Mod Support as well, it will not be the case for PlayStation 5, as well as mod authoring tools.

BeamNG.drive is available now in early access on PC and PlayStation 5.
