Google has launched Playground, an experimental AI platform that lets users create and play games without needing to know how to code.
The platform launched in the US on October 7 for users aged 18 and older. Players can describe the game they want using text prompts, then immediately play what the AI creates.
Users can also change their games by asking the AI to adjust things like characters, rules, physics, and environments.
Google Playground turns prompts into playable games
Players can start from scratch or remix existing games created by other users. Finished games can be kept private, shared through a link, or published to Playground’s Explore section for others to play.
Some games also support multiplayer and leaderboards. Users with a Google Play Games profile can create a handle, follow creators, and like games.
GoogleGoogle says published games will go through safety screening, while players can also report content that violates its guidelines.
Playground currently runs in a web browser and works across phones and laptops. Access to its creation tools is offered in different tiers depending on a user’s Google One membership.
Unity is bringing more advanced tools to Playground
Google is also working with Unity on a more advanced version of the technology called Unity Spark.
The integration will allow creators to make more complex games with advanced mechanics and higher-quality 3D graphics while still using Playground’s AI creation tools. Unity Spark is currently being tested, with a closed beta planned for the future.
For now, Playground is available as an experiment to adults in the US, with Google planning to continue developing the platform based on feedback from users.
Playground isn’t Google’s only recent experiment with AI and gaming.
The company has also been developing SIMA 2, an AI agent designed to understand and interact with 3D game worlds. Google has been training the model using games including No Man’s Sky and Goat Simulator 3, with the AI learning to follow instructions and complete tasks inside virtual environments.
While SIMA 2 focuses on AI playing and understanding games, Playground puts the technology in the hands of users to create games of their own.
