We'll tell you much more next year about the world, the game, the team building it and, importantly, how you can start getting involved. For now, there are a few things we want you to know:
- Our 4th MMO is now in development.
- It's a new RuneScape MMORPG, built in Unreal Engine
- It sits alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and Dragonwilds as an independent experience
- It will be true to our principles of integrity, permanent progression, and community driven development
- It's set in Gielinor and begins in Ashenfall.
- It's still a few years away, but we're telling you now because we want to build it with you.
Comes alongside the roadmaps and reveals for Dragonwilds, RuneScape (3), and Old School RuneScape

I remember the Dragonwilds team pretty much hinting at using the engine for an mmo so this tracks.
Nice! I hope it has the same graphical look as dragonwilds.

Has seen more 10s than EA ever will
The OSRS team has done really great work, and even RS3 has been improved upon and is seemingly doing alright. I'm willing to give them another chance with something new, assuming it doesn't pull away from OSRS.
My guess is Dragonwilds was kinda of a test for them before expanding that out to an MMO and.. yeah. I could be into that if the foundation is similar to OSRS.

Looks like it given they showed the same models for the NPCs from Dragonwilds.
Cool! Feels like MMOs are having a comeback lately
What is interesting is with Dragonwilds (which is very fun btw) we've seen a "beta" of Runescape 4 already. It works very well. I wouldn't be surprised if we see it sooner rather than later in mmo terms at least.
They put a blog up at the same time with more details
Hell yeah. I'm very interested

where are 2 and 3?
2 is OSRS and 3 is modern RS.
where are 2 and 3?
Runescape 3 (1), Old School Runescape (2), Dragonwilds (3)
The 4 is their fourth project, and just a working title from the blog. "Right now, it's rocking a working title: RS4. That isn't necessarily the name we'll eventually settle on, but this is our fourth generation RuneScape project, so RS4 works pretty well for now."

where are 2 and 3?
The modern "Runescape" as it is today is RuneScape 3. RuneScape 2 was the period around like 2004-2012 and is what Old School Runescape is based off.
where are 2 and 3?
Current RuneScape is RS3
Hell yeah, give me more MMOs.
I remember playing soooo sooo much Runescape (2) back in the days, I loved it so much
Runescape 3 just never clicked for me and quite frankly its pretty ugly
but 4? man with such a big MMO drought over the years and FF14 really the only one keeping the genre alive for me seeing RS4, Guild Wars 3 and WoW Forever is crazy stuff im excited to eventually see more of this
Runescape 3 wasn't well received and people just stayed with 2
Dragonwilds being a testing ground for Unreal Engine makes a lot of sense. Guess we'll see how it translates into a MMO.
I wonder what the limit on how many games Jagex can support is. I'd imagine RS3 players might be sweating.
Definitely interested as someone who's been playing Runescape on and off for over 20 years.
I really think old school is fantastic and they've done an incredible job managing it. People will be all over this I bet.

There was no staying with 2 until old school released in 2013. The evolution of combat update is what killed RuneScape and predated RS"3" by a little bit but yah. EOC wasnt well received and thats what RS3 is built on
That said, Jagex has done a ton of work on RS3 this year. They removed a ton of mtx and cleaned up a lot of the problems it's had for like a decade.

RS3 has been getting a pretty big revamp so Jagex won't be cutting it loose anytime soon. RS4 is still years away so all the games will be fine until then.
Not sure if I want to see the development it with Unreal Engine....
where are 2 and 3?
Runescape 1
Runescape 2
Runescape 3
Let's see how 4 is because I haven't played since 2007

Pray to god this comes to mobile too
Guild Wars 3 and now a new RuneScape. Feels weird that we're actually getting some new MMO's to look forward too.
If it's a console release also, count me in day one.

Well that's good. I can imagine a scenario where disgruntled 3 players are already upset resources go to the Oldhead game and then end up getting caught between Old Thing and New Thing as the outlier.
Never really played 3 myself though. Was one of the people who hated EoC.

Surely will given that Dragonwilds has released on console + its Unreal Engine.

So stoked for both. Hoping that Riot MMO sees the light of day too. WoW Forever should pump more general interest back into the genre.
I remember thinking "MMOs are back!" when New World launched to 200k+ players, actually got super sad the other day remembering that one is going to be completely gone in a few months. Hope these new ones don't bite off more than they can chew with the speed of development needed like that one.

they basically just devalued and made the future of my character I've spent 24 years on questionable with this reignited shit
I never switched to OSRS because I never want to restart, and I wont play reignited for the same reason. Played this game near all my life and think it's finally time to hang it up.
Its a good time to be an MMO player

why would it be devalued? OSRS also has fresh start worlds but like nobody plays on them. The RS3 worlds may see a lot of players at first but i wouldn't be surprised if they bounce and go back to the mainline worlds.
If it releases on console I'll give it a go. Been on a RuneScape binge recently with osrs on my phone and dragonwilds on my switch 2
Dragonwilds was surprisingly fun so this taking lessons from that is pretty exciting.

I've been so desperate for an MMO with a particular type of design philosophy I love and I couldn't be happier to have this, WoW Forever, and Guild Wars 3 over the next few years

this is not how reignited works
reignited players can play on reignited worlds and veteran worlds with no change. When they interact with the grand exchange, no matter what type of world they are on, they will be buying and selling from the reignited economy. They cannot trade with or boss with veteran players, but they can see them and talk to them.
Veteran players can only play on veteran worlds, not reignited worlds. And can only trade with and boss with other veteran players.
Yeah I'll bet this comes to console. Before the RS3 Summit they took some community questions and one of them was if the game will ever come to console. They didn't even say no, just that it wouldn't be part of today's announcements.
The more new MMOs the better! I never played the previous iterations, but if it looks like Dragonwilds but is an actual MMORPG, I will be there Day 1!
I picked up dragonwilds knowing nothing and had a lot of fun, it's basically valheim but I think it's good so I'll check this out.
I'm all in. I've been in the game on and off since 2003.
I'll be keeping an eye on this for sure.
Well, that is A WAY to deal with the Hyperinflation of RS3's economy.
Having a blast with Dragonwilds, bring this new MMO to console and it may very well be my first MMO
Gonna be honest, I didn't have Runescape 4 on my bingo card, but I've played since Runescape 1 and still play 3, so I'll see how it goes.
Idk how I feel about RS4 being set in Ashenfall, but Dragonwilds is fun and the right template for an MMO.
The RS3 updates on the other hand...woof.

The original plans for next year were to go to Vampyrium, the Planet of the Vampires, and get the 30th skill.
...Gonna imagine delaying those didn't help fan perceptions there.
That said, finally getting the Gnome City of Arposandra is a long time coming.

Yeah I was extremely excited for Vampyrium and both Archaeology and Necromancy were excellent additions to the game...
It's nice that Arposandra is coming but the gnome questline was always the one I was least interested in of the ones that went unfinished for years. It was also extremely easy to predict that people would hate Reignited and they decided to shoot themselves in the foot anyway. Feels like they have zero confidence in RS3 kinda.

I was personally rooting for The Skull to continue our journey through the Wushanko Isles. It's the source of Gunpowder on Gielinor, so high level Ranged weapons could have gotten wild.
Plus, it's where a good chunk of Player-Owned Ports' story took place.
