Helldivers 2 is replacing nProtect GameGuard with Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) today, October 20, as developer Arrowhead Game Studios attempts to tackle a growing problem with gameplay-altering mods. The change introduces additional security measures intended to prevent players from gaining unfair advantages, manipulating the Galactic War and disrupting other players’ experiences.
The decision follows weeks of heated discussions about modding within the Helldivers 2 community. While some players welcome stronger restrictions, others worry that legitimate cosmetic and quality-of-life modifications could be affected. The change also coincides with today’s launch of the Scope of Authority Premium Warbond.
Why Is Helldivers 2 Replacing GameGuard With Easy Anti-Cheat?
In an official Steam announcement, Arrowhead explained that its existing implementation of GameGuard had not provided the protection it wanted. The studio has therefore decided to switch to Easy Anti-Cheat, a system it says is already used in more than 200 games.
The developer claims some players have been using modifications to gain unfair advantages, interfere with resource collection, and even manipulate the wider Galactic War. Given that Helldivers 2 features shared community objectives, these activities can affect players who never knowingly join a modified session.
Arrowhead is introducing additional security measures alongside EAC to target recently circulating cheat mods. However, it has stopped short of announcing a blanket ban on all modifications, acknowledging the creativity involved in cosmetic changes that don’t negatively affect other players.
The studio warned that some legitimate cosmetic mods may temporarily stop functioning and require updates from their creators. Players experiencing problems with non-destructive modifications have been encouraged to contact Arrowhead’s support team.
Importantly, the transition does not introduce new hardware requirements or remove Steam Deck and Linux compatibility. Nevertheless, Arrowhead says players use mods at their own discretion and that it cannot guarantee which modifications are safe.
Helldivers 2 Modding Controversy Divides Players as New Warbond Arrives
The announcement comes after increasingly heated discussions about modding in Helldivers 2. In an October Reddit discussion, players debated why gameplay modifications have attracted such strong opposition in a cooperative shooter.
One argument is that modifying weapons, enemy behavior or mission mechanics can undermine the intended experience, even without competitive multiplayer. Players joining public matches may find themselves alongside teammates using equipment or abilities that behave differently from the standard game, potentially removing the challenge or affecting progression.
Others argue that the distinction between cheating and quality-of-life improvements is less straightforward. Modifications that improve visibility, change stratagem placement, or address frustrating gameplay mechanics can be considered helpful by some players and unfair advantages by others.
These disagreements have intensified following Arrowhead’s announcement. In a new r/helldivers2 discussion, one player argued that the popularity of gameplay modifications reflects dissatisfaction with aspects of the game’s design, suggesting Arrowhead should consider incorporating useful features into the base game.
Other commenters disagreed, arguing that individual modders shouldn’t determine gameplay balance in public sessions. Several players also expressed concern about cosmetic modifications being caught by the new security measures, even when they don’t change how the game plays.
The controversy has extended beyond Reddit. On October 16, a Nexus Mods user published an unofficial anti-cheat mod intended to identify suspected cheaters in public lobbies. Its discussion section attracted arguments over whether gameplay modifications should be treated as cheating, illustrating how divided the community has become.
For Arrowhead, the challenge is protecting its shared multiplayer experience without unnecessarily alienating players who enjoy harmless customization. The developer’s statement suggests it recognizes that distinction, although the practical effects of EAC on existing mods will become clearer following the transition.
The timing also coincides with the arrival of the Scope of Authority Premium Warbond, which launches today, October 20. Focused on long-range combat and stealth, it introduces the R-40 Sightliner bolt-action sniper rifle, P-44 Mist machine pistol, AMW-20 Apex anti-materiel rifle and LAS-44 Nova energy weapon.
Additional equipment includes G-11 Caltrops and two armor sets featuring the Stationary Shroud passive, which reduces weapon sway and detection range while crouched or prone.
With new content arriving alongside a significant security overhaul, October 20 represents another important moment for Helldivers 2. Whether Easy Anti-Cheat successfully limits disruptive modifications without affecting legitimate customization will likely determine how players respond to the change over the coming weeks.
