模组作者 Jabe Games 将《黑暗之魂》战斗植入暴雪《魔兽世界》,含翻滚、无敌帧与尸身拾取
Modder Jabe Games Grafts Dark Souls Combat Onto Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, Complete With Rolls, I-Frames, and Corpse Runs
Have you ever dreamed of adding Soulslike combat to Blizzard's World of Warcraft? That's precisely the purpose of WoW Souls, a single player prototype in development by modder Jabe Games.
This week, the modder published two videos demonstrating the prototype running in Northshire Valley, the starting area of the human race in the popular MMORPG. Interestingly, it contains no game files, instead reading the user's installations of World of Warcraft 1.12 and Dark Souls Remastered.
WoW Souls runs on benilla, an open-source client based on WoW 1.12 written from scratch in Rust and Bevy and co-developed with Claude. Crucially, benilla (and thus WoW Souls) doesn't include any Blizzard-owned content, which could help protect the project against DMCA strikes.
In the second, most recent video, Jabe Games also listed the Everwood benilla fork, which improves World of Warcraft's visuals in areas like lighting and shadows, sky, fog and atmosphere, water, post-processing, weather and nature, and more.
But the meat of WoW Souls is, of course, its Soulslike combat. The modder says that the player character uses the straight sword moves from Dark Souls Remastered. Light attacks performed with R1 chain three moves, R2 swings a heavy attack, and a light press after a roll starts the rolling attack. All the animations and timings come from the Dark Souls data, and so do the stamina costs and damage multipliers. The dodge also uses the Dark Souls roll animation with its invincibility frames and root motion.
The camera orbits the player character in Souls-style, and a lock-on feature keeps it on the target while the player can strafe and backpedal around it. Each hit freezes the frame for a moment and shows damage numbers over an enemy health bar. In classic Souls-style, dying means the souls carried stay with the corpse; the character then respawns at the nearby Abbey and runs back to pick them up.
It's yet another exciting example of the modding possibilities that leverage AI assistance in some form, following the famous Spider-Man meets Batman Arkham mod. Mixing game mechanics and settings will be much easier from now on, enabling the creation of dream concepts. Personally, I wish Blizzard had remade combat in World of Warcraft Forever to be, if not Soulslike, at least action-based; perhaps, not too far in the future, a fan-made version of the MMORPG will include that.
