Final Fantasy Resonance launches on October 22 with a Visions system that changes how character progression works across the whole run. A hands-on breakdown from PlayStation Blog shows 26 Visions, drawn from 16 mainline Final Fantasy titles, waiting at crystal shrines across the entire game. Each shrine presents a short story about a past hero, video clips, and multiple-choice questions before the player receives the Vision. The roster spans iconic villain Sephiroth, amnesiac rebel Terra, the first Warrior of Light, stoic battler Lightning, Noctis, Zidane, and Cloud, plus Black Mage Tronn from Brave Exvius.

The game is the first HD-2D Final Fantasy and launches October 22 on PC, PS5, Switch, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S for $49.99, according to Square Enix. Square Enix’s press materials describe a strategic turn-based battle system with a modern twist, the return of chocobos, espers, and airships, and a story based on the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, rebuilt as a console-quality RPG. The PlayStation Blog hands-on covers the final game and follows main characters Rain and Lasswell on their quest to save the world of Lapis.

Visions and Espers work differently

When equipped to a main party member, a Vision adds baseline health and speed plus magic and physical strikes. Noctis opens with a 20 percent attack boost and lets the holder cast Thunder or Blizzard. Each Vision then earns mastery points from winning battles that unlock more bonuses and Vision-specific abilities. Noctis’s early mastery adds a 40 percent increase to the equipped member’s limit burst gauge each time that character defeats an enemy. The limit burst gauge fills over the course of a fight and lets the player deliver a powerful single attack. Zidane unlocks Steal, which can be boosted with Mug to add potential damage to the theft.

Espers are the traditional summons and join a battle for a set number of turns. A Vision stays equipped and changes how a character functions over an entire dungeon. The Esper is the burst button used when a fight turns bad. Most Visions do not talk outside combat chatter. Each keeps the animations and music of its original game, and its attacks stay faithful to that source title.

Affinity grows the more a party member uses a Vision, which produces more bonuses. Players can also collect magicite and visit the Moogle of Light to raise a Vision’s base rank and unlock more abilities, so a Vision can advance with magicite instead of grinding battles. The same character can hold a damage-oriented Vision or a support Vision, and the permanent stat increases mean the choice affects survival as much as active skills.

The stagger-to-Resonance flow

The biggest Vision payoff arrives through Resonance. By staggering every opponent, which means finding each enemy’s weakness and depleting its stagger meter, the player can trigger an equipped Vision’s cinematic finisher. Once every opponent is staggered, the player chooses which equipped Vision’s finisher to spend. Cloud’s “Ascension Resonance” is the visible example. The stagger meter tracks progress toward the finisher during turn-based combat, and it shows when the finisher is available.

The soundtrack borrows cues from previous Final Fantasy titles, and players can still whistle for a Chocobo ride with the classic theme tune.

The Brave Exvius rebuild puts Visions at the center

Square Enix’s press materials confirm that Final Fantasy Resonance is based on the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, rebuilt as a console-quality RPG. Brave Exvius centered on collecting and fielding legacy Final Fantasy characters as units. In Resonance, those unit identities become the Visions players find at crystal shrines. Each hero is tied to a shrine, a short story, and a combat kit. The hands-on material contains no mention of paid Visions or post-launch unlocks.

Role and Vision pairing decides what a character does

The job system steers how a character approaches a fight, and each Vision has a role where it excels. Breakers stagger enemies, Saboteurs disrupt and debuff, Commandos deal damage, and Medics heal. Visions slot into those roles. Lasswell is a Breaker. Medic Leah gives him healing magic and lets him pass his combat turn to an ally, so he becomes a durable backup support. Cloud is a Breaker too, and that pairing gives Lasswell stronger offense.

Lid joins with a Commando damage-dealing skill set. Team her with Zidane, whose Saboteur skills disrupt and debuff enemies, and she can pressure both damage and enemy status. A single run can take the same character into different roles through Vision choice. Swapping the equipped Vision is how a character evolves to match the next challenge.

Turn-based combat keeps every Vision and Esper activation at a clear cost. Players can see when a stagger window opens, when the limit burst gauge is about to fill, and whether swapping an equipped Vision before a fight is worth losing affinity time. Final Fantasy Resonance’s director has explained why turn-based RPGs are making a comeback.

What is still not disclosed

Square Enix and PlayStation Blog have not stated the full list of all 26 Visions, the exact number of roles or jobs, the total mastery levels per Vision, or whether Resonance behaves identically on every platform. The sources also do not confirm whether any Visions are paid or post-launch DLC.
