Story Highlight
- Phantom Blade Zero’s director has said PlayStation was shocked when the game was first shown to the company.
- The reaction came before the game gained wider attention through its public reveal and gameplay showcases.
- PlayStation then picked the game to showcase during its 2023 event.
Phantom Blade Zero’s upcoming release has many excited for its action-packed gameplay and shift from traditional Souls-like gameplay. At the same time, many have been somewhat let down by the game’s lack of a physical release.
The game itself, however, looks impressive in many ways. In fact, S-Game says that PlayStation was left shocked by the game at first sight.
Why it matters: PlayStation has historically had a knack for identifying smaller projects with much potential, making Phantom Blade Zero just one of the many projects it found early in development.
S-Game says Phantom Blade Zero made an immediate impression on PlayStation when the studio first presented the action RPG. This was the same trailer that was shown off in 2023 during PlayStation’s showcase.
Phantom Blade Zero caught PlayStation’s attention very quickly, according to comments from the game’s director. The developer recalled that PlayStation was shocked when S-Game first presented the title.
Interestingly enough, executives Shuhei Yoshida and Christian Svensson then saw the same footage and insisted S-Game show off the game for the first time at PlayStation’s State of Play.
The business guy called all of them to come to watch the trailer. Christian said, ‘This is so impressive,’ and so they invited us to join their showcase in 2023.

Three years later, Phantom Blade Zero is now close to being released later this month. The game is also launching as a PS5 console exclusive.
