Final Fantasy VII Revelation PS5 Preview. I was recently invited down to London to go a hands-on with the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final chapter in Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Remake project. The demo starts off in a unique mission that seems to be designed specifically for this hands-on. I’ll admit I was a little shocked at the location having played the original game, but suffice to say it’s pretty significant in the overall plot.
Before we talk about the demo, I took some time to check the options for both difficulty and graphics. The hands-on build offered access to Easy/Normal difficulty settings, plus dynamic levelling for the enemies or fixed levels. Though the demo didn’t have a hard mode, it’s been confirmed since I played the demo that it should be in the full game on release. The game’s combat has the same options as Rebirth, and as such it almost felt like I hadn’t left, as basic functions felt very much like Rebirth but just improved.
There were four different graphics options that I could choose also, though as I only had time to play through the demo once, I can’t comment on the differences. In terms of modes however, there’s the typical Quality and Performance options, which was split into performance sharp/smooth, and you also had Versatility mode, which was a mix of both while keeping 4K/60 FPS. I played the FFVII Revelation demo in Quality mode, and the game felt incredibly smooth and was just stunning to look at.

My Number? Where?
The demo was a unique experience, set in the Northern Crater. I’ll keep spoilers to a minimum here given the location, but in terms of characters I had access to the entire party including Vincent and Cid. I spent most of my time on Cloud, though; I really should have played the new characters more.
If you have played Rebirth, the combat is very similar. I had access to the FITs system, though I mainly used it with the summons. Cloud had access to Ifrit, Shiva and Titan. What was really cool is they will do attacks with you, just like the previous games, but also now you can perform synergy attacks with the summons. Most of the enemies in the demo died before the Summon could do their main attacks, but I did get a couple of Synergy attacks off, and they looked really awesome. Shiva in particular had some stylish attacks in the demo. You could use blood pact attacks, which, depending on the summon, can either do a ton of damage for the use of your ATB gauge, but also smaller summons can do less damage but can give party-wide defensive buffs.
Vincent could transform into the Galian beast, while in the transformed state, you will get Chaos Stacks, which seem to be represented by an Omega Symbol. I thought this was a cool reference to the Dirge of Cerberus game. However, these stacks are not a good thing; the longer you are in the transformed state, the more stacks you will gain, up to three stacks. This will decrease Vincent’s Max HP. While in normal form, Vincent has a mix of close-range attacks and gun attacks. He also has the damnation skill while transformed and the damnation prime if you press the button in perfect timing.
I didn’t really spend any time with Cid, but from what I saw, his combat is mainly focused on using the mark system to target up to five enemies. Once you have done that, his skills will deal increased damage to those adversaries. He also has three follow-up abilities that, after doing a basic attack, will cause Cid to glow blue, and these attacks can be triggered.
- Turbulence: Launches both Cid and the target high into the air. This serves as his primary launcher, setting up his midair-heavy toolkit.
- Stinger: A rapid-fire spam attack where repeatedly pressing Square unleashes multiple piercing stabs into the enemy. I don’t know why, but this gave me a DMC style combat feel.
- Top Gear: A gap-closer that allows Cid to rush directly at his target while remaining airborne

I can’t wait to get hands-on with more of the characters. I didn’t get to touch the FITs system that much, so I am still interested to see how that will work. I did like the fact I had several different party formations, and I could swap at any time while running around the map. I also got to take on a boss fight; the name was changed slightly from the original, though I don’t know if this will be the same with the full game or if even this mission will exist, as it was labelled a ‘special’ mission.
Head In The Clouds
I also had the option to have characters auto-pick up materials rather than spamming the X button to pick them up, which I assume is new for FFVII Revelation. I will be making sure this option is turned on for my playthrough next year. Meanwhile, the graphics are just stunning, and the character dialogue during the exploration just added to the experience. Even during my brief experience with the game, it knew when to be funny and when to rein things a bit to adopt a more serious tone. I can’t wait to see the open world, some of the future boss fights and whatever new content Square Enix has planned for this concluding chapter in the remake trilogy.
Overall, I had a heap of fun taking Final Fantasy VII Revelation for a spin during my hands-on and I really can’t wait to sit down and play it again sometime. It’s going to be a long wait for the full game, that’s for sure, although I hope a demo gets released to the public at some point so people can test out some of the new features.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches on April 8, 2027 for PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.
Thanks to Square Enix for the opportunity to go hands-on with Final Fantasy VII Revelation!
