Electronic Arts has announced it is shutting down BioWare, who were founded in 1995 and bought by EA in 2007 as part of a wave of layoffs and project cuts. They are the revered studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
Jason Schreier reports that EA will cut roughly 3% of its staff, around 400 jobs with about 50 of those at BioWare. As a result, the next Mass Effect game which was in early development at BioWare has been canned.
In a letter to staff Chief Studios Officer Cam Weber wrote that "over the past several months we've taken a hard look at our business":
EA letter to staff said:
Across our portfolio, we're making deliberate choices to align talent and investments where we see the greatest opportunities for players and long-term growth.
The Sims is also on the chopping block with a planned game codenamed Project Lotus being cancelled.
EA went private in August through a $55 billion buyout led by Saudi Arabia's investment fund, which put around $18 billion of debt on EA's books. The company had already told investors it planned to save up to $700 million by cutting research and development costs.
