Becastled’s Traits and Some Magic DLC is out now, and its centerpiece is a trait system built to stop one strategy from winning on nearly every level. In the city-builder and tower-defense game, you build the Sun Kingdom’s castle by day and hold it against Moon beasts by night. Developer Mana Potion Studios says veteran players had settled into builds that left little reason to try other buildings, units, or approaches, so the expansion steers each run toward a plan shaped by what you draw instead of what you always do.
More than 40 traits, picked one of three
Every few in-game days and after each Blood Moon, you choose one of three traits. They come in Common, Uncommon, and Rare rarities, and surviving a Blood Moon raises your odds of seeing rarer options. Some are straightforward, adding a small economy boost or a bit of extra unit health. The best ones hand over a much stronger effect in exchange for a real restriction.
Master of the Bow locks you into archers and boosts their damage significantly in return. Manifest Destiny lets you claim several upcoming zones for free at the cost of lower mood. Glass Cannon raises damage while trimming unit health. The studio built these trade-offs on purpose, reasoning that a bonus with no downside would make every option correct. That leaves players to ask whether a strong bonus is worth accepting its limitation, whether they can spend resources on it right now, and whether their current army can survive the new restriction.
The traits then stack. Glass Cannon, Blood Money, and Master of the Bow together produce archers that hit hard enough to carry a run. A different run might leave you with devastating archers and no walls at all, or units so tanky they become a chore to kill. Mana Potion Studios balanced the 40-plus traits through internal playtests and Google Sheets formulas, checking individual values and the way effects interact once they combine, because the combinations matter more than any single number. With more than 40 traits in play, the studio says there are far more possible pairings than a single balance pass could enumerate.
Mages and Clerics change the army
The DLC also adds two unit types recruited from a new Mage School. Mages were designed around high risk and high reward from the start, easy to kill but packing heavy area damage that shines against groups of enemies. A well-positioned Mage can wipe out many opponents in a few attacks, and the studio suggests tucking them behind walls or other units where enemies have a harder time reaching them.
Clerics are just as fragile but heal instead of damaging. They address the constant loss of units in the base game, especially during boss fights. A Cleric gives players a way to keep units alive longer, which the studio says should help anyone trying to finish a run without losing a single unit. Paired with Swordsmen, Clerics form a sturdy front line, but enemy archers and certain other units can still kill an exposed Cleric quickly, so unit placement becomes part of the decision.
Why the trade-offs exist
The goal is to stop runs from repeating themselves. Before the DLC, a player who found a strategy that worked on almost any level had little reason to change, and Becastled’s two halves both narrowed into that one loop. The trait system asks for a different commitment every run, the way Frostpunk weighs comfort against survival to keep its settlements from all playing out the same way.
The design also had to fit a small team. Mana Potion Studios built the trait system so designers can create new traits without a programmer implementing each one, which saved time and let the team iterate faster during playtests. Some planned features did not make the cut, including a pre-game modifier system that would have let players stack restrictions or remove mechanics like mood and the unit limit. The studio frames that experiment as the direction of travel and wants to give players more reasons to change how they normally play.
Traits and Some Magic is available now for Becastled, whose base game sells for $24.99. It lands alongside other building games’ paid expansions.
