Harbour Masters(Ship of Harkinian team) Using AI Code + AI Assets in All of Their Ports Now
Harbour Masters(Ship of Harkinian 团队)现于全部移植项目中采用 AI 代码与 AI 资产。其主分支最近 3 次提交与开放 PR 中最近 10 个皆由 AI 生成,Ship of Harkinian 更含数百万行 AI 共同作者代码,团队领导人 Kenix 的分支亦经 Copilot 完成。
As originally posted over in the Decompilation OT & suggested in there for its own thread, Slopiskillingretrogaming over on PCGamingWiki put out a post detailing how Harbour Masters seems to be adding & using AI for their projects
Post here: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Topic:Zljvpivt5x0j7zzx
Transcript of the post below:
Harbour Masters has shifted into using ridiculous amounts of AI generated code and even some assets recently, and their projects arguably do not meet the requirements of the PC gaming wiki anymore. Their runtime component called libultraship ( https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/ ) has been particularly slopped up, but it's also being used on the individual ports too. They've even started trying to hide some of the AI usage by removing the AI coauthor, but it's still very easy to see that it's AI. As of the time of writing this, the 3 most recent commits to the main branch are all AI generated: these two have explicit AI contributorship https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/commit/023572df7b9399b4e50ef77341e7e2c1297fab94 and https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/commit/4d704c6d0e4922f4f8366dff4373aa0a5850e010, while this one has had the AI usage hidden but is very obviously AI by reading the unreadable and em-dash littered description: https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/commit/759b13401cd6903daa67a00a753066f791622e78. The two most recently active branches are also completely done by Copilot: https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/tree/copilot/reimplement-parallel-rdp-rendering and https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/tree/copilot/copilotupdate-based-on-latest-main. They're done by Kenix, the leader of Harbour Masters, so this isn't just some random AI contributions by third parties happening to get merged.
If you look at the open PRs the story gets even worse, with all 10 of the most recently opened ones being AI. Again, these are all members of Harbour Masters including some lead maintainers of individual ports, so it's not just random people. Some of them have kept the AI coauthor on the commits, but the unreadable PR descriptions, em dashes, and unnecessarily verbose and redundant comments make it clear that the others are too:https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/pull/1295https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/pull/1294https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/pull/1293https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/pull/1292https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/pull/1291https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/pull/1290https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/pull/1289https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/pull/1288https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/pull/1286 (the only one that the author was honest enough to disclose the AI for)https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/pull/1285
They're even trying to vibe code an entire Vulkan renderer: https://github.com/Kenix3/libultraship/pull/1265. You can see the comment at the top is basically what the prompt would have been: "make a vulkan renderer based on the metal one". It has all the signs of AI I mentioned earlier, but also has em-dashes in code comments which literally nobody does (check gfx_vulkan.cpp).
As I said earlier, the individual ports aren't doing much better. For example, Ship of Harkinian itself has literally millions of lines of AI coauthored code: https://github.com/HarbourMasters/Shipwright/graphs/contributors?from=6/13/2026. Entire enhancements are being vibe coded in commits like https://github.com/HarbourMasters/Shipwright/commit/6a3c9b760456c27ed8a0ac9ffdb580fdf105829c. They also have AI investigating bugs for them: https://github.com/HarbourMasters/Shipwright/issues/6955.
There's more from their other projects like Spaghetti Kart, with vibe coded bug fixes like https://github.com/HarbourMasters/SpaghettiKart/commit/78a012ce06b8756870e18230c3957c00cc2a66da and https://github.com/HarbourMasters/SpaghettiKart/commit/322cd52c167842f22d818066ef18ce7b25439075, and here's a huge pending PRs for some brand new renderer features that is also fully vibe coded: https://github.com/HarbourMasters/SpaghettiKart/pull/711. They're also using AI generated images too, like the image for Spaghetti Kart's thunderstore page: https://gcdn.thunderstore.io/assets/spaghetti-kart/spaghetti-kart-cover-360x480.webp. You can go to https://thunderstore.io/ and search for spaghetti kart to see it directly in the page.

Time to never update ghost/starship then. "low-background steel" comparison is increasingly apt.
well thank god we have an updated OoT coming out
This is very disappointing to learn. How recent has SoH been shat on?

So apparently according to Knurek in the Decomp OT, any build before June 7th should be save, but I'm not 100% sure. At this point, I'd suggest to everyone just use the Recomp based PC ports(for OoT & other N64 games) going forward since the Recomp peeps seem to have a hard-line anti-AI slop stance
Voluntarily using AI for a hobby project is such odd behavior. If you don't want to work on it, then don't! Doubly so for something like this, which may as well have been called "done" to most people's satisfaction. Why poop in it?
Oh FFS. Even more reason to be excited for the OOT recomp then
Yeah they were on a podcast a year ago talking about it

I think my build is from Jan so that's good to hear. I'll take note to follow other ports going forward. I don't quite understand the differences in Decomp/Recomp and where SoH falls into, but yeah if I ever feel the need to try something else, I'll not look at SoH anymore.

My exact thought.
If you don't want to do something, just don't do it...

Yup the dude that did the Pepsiman vibe code port was like "this was the only way I could finish it I didn't have enough time otherwise"
like brother then dont fucking do it
Same with the port of PSO for browser like I dont want this AI bullshit

It is so weird for people & projects to just keep self-owning themselves into bad internet PR, boggles the mind
dannymate
Helpfully ethical and ethically helpful
That's a shame. It's infecting everything at this point. Any project not on Codeberg or SourceHut has the chance of this happening to it.
Madao
Avalanche's One Winged Slayer
huh, to think i used them as an example of good non-AI PC ports back when the AI slop PC port of F-Zero X appeared, this sucks.
i guess the project got too big and the owners too greedy to keep things free of AI slop.
User Banned (5 Days): dismissive commentary, equating emulation/recompiling with piracy, long history of infractions
Couldn't really care less given they're not working for profit, and most people using it will be engaging in piracy anyway. Seems a bit holier than though to complain about stolen assets while using a stolen ROM.
Damn a year ago, that podcast was either a very small/niche one &/or that just flew under everyone's radar
It was a software engineering one, so more niche and not something this community would generally follow.
But basically they've been hoping AI can help with decompilation for a very long time. They've already been opening up the process to anyone through the very cool website https://decomp.me/ and at that point you don't know how people are coming up with the code.

On the devil advocate side, dont tell how people should approach how they do their hobbies either. Its a hobby project, not a paid product

I'm using my backed up cartridge, I have the GCN collection, I have the Wii VC and Wii U VC releases, and I'm subscribed to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass. I'd bet the majority of people interested in independent releases such as these has at least one copy of their own. If they are using such projects to pirate it, I'd doubt they would pay for it to begin with, even if such a project didn't exist.
Anyway, this is irrelevant to the discussion. If developers wish to use AI in their projects, they must accept that there are people that will no longer wish to engage in their software. This thread functions to inform people.
how disappointing
guess they didn't care how this choice would tarnish their reputation and make their projects untrustworthy software. I'd never install and let that code run on any of my machines.
I'm curious what tags/releases correspond to the pre-tainted versions of each project. would love to compile/see a list, maybe even make a github account that hosts forks of them all at the most recent pre-tainted release
I've got complicated feelings since I'm told I need to be using these tools at work so getting worked up about these tools in a hobby project I'm not paying for seems incongruous. The SoH team has also maybe earned a little bit of the benefit of the doubt that they aren't going to slop up their codebase since they have done several of these ports before AI tools were available/common, and they presumably have more pride in their code than a rando who pops up out of nowhere with a brand new recomp.
That said if your beef is the environmental effects and energy consumption of these tools, or the material they were trained on, rather than the quality of the codebase, that's totally valid too and this is disappointing.

To be fair they probably don't think about it as not doing it themselves, they probably see it as a tool to do more faster. I'm not saying I agree with it but it's a common attitude. They also may be reviewing every generated line of code and testing and editing as needed/desired. I have no idea. Also most of these pull requests seem to be for their libultraship library which isn't "done" as they're expanding it to work for Gamecube games instead of just N64.
On the devil advocate side, dont tell how people should approach how they do their hobbies either. Its a hobby project, not a paid product
Yeah, people approach hobbies and other things they do in their free time differently. Coding and decompiling aren't even artistic, it's just technical work.
It doesn't surprise me at all.
Damn homie, in highschool you was the man homie.
Not the development i was hoping to see.
Couldn't really care less given they're not working for profit, and most people using it will be engaging in piracy anyway. Seems a bit holier than though to complain about stolen assets while using a stolen ROM.
Personally i never saw the possiblity of one unethical action as being justification to do more unethical actions.

Fun to hear about ones hobbies.

I'd say that a lot of these people are less interested in the project and more in what they might be able to get when they say that they can vibecode things.
Couldn't really care less given they're not working for profit, and most people using it will be engaging in piracy anyway. Seems a bit holier than though to complain about stolen assets while using a stolen ROM.
What are you on about honestly.
Coding and decompiling aren't even artistic, it's just technical work.
I'd challenge that...there's plenty of art in technical work.
I don't tend to play recompilations outside of exceptions like Sonic Unleashed, so it's not really my wheelhouse. Putting aside the fundamentally bad practice of using AI for coding to begin with, has vibecoded PC recompilations caused issues in proper gameplay or performance?

Sometimes, sometimes not. It depend case per case from what i saw and tried when checking, honestly.
AI Code, at this point, I'm a bit whatever with as far as it's use, but i still don't like AI asset use

"AI is fine in this case IMO since most people have stolen the game anyway and no one is making any money so stop complaining" is a take.
They can get absolutely fucked then, as far as I'm concerned.
On the devil advocate side, dont tell how people should approach how they do their hobbies either. Its a hobby project, not a paid product
Using AI pisses in the fucking well. No, actually fuck anyone using this shit
I don't tend to play recompilations outside of exceptions like Sonic Unleashed, so it's not really my wheelhouse. Putting aside the fundamentally bad practice of using AI for coding to begin with, has vibecoded PC recompilations caused issues in proper gameplay or performance?
Yes, the more vibecoded something is, the more bug-prone it's going to be. Something like that 3D-ified Pokemon Red that was entirely vibecoded barely runs and is full of bugs.
You're not going to notice it on a big project with a stable codebase like SoH because the commits are being controlled by people who actually understand how the game works (and presumably there is more thorough testing involved), but - again, even with ethical concerns aside - it's a slippery slope when you start to drink slop from a firehose like Harbour Masters seems like they've been. Performance will probably start to suffer, since gen AI code is usually longer, roundabout, and less efficient, and (especially as they accept more and more vibecoded submissions) eventually the quality of what they are putting out will start to suffer more noticeably.
Also re: recompilations specifically, vibecoded recomps are increasingly not really actually proper recomps but basically just an emulation wrapper.
It really seems like some kind of damn broke a few months ago, and now there's just an absolute constant flood of AI assisted/coded projects. We are talking multiple decomp/recomp/ports/fpga cores/etc a day. Even projects like these ones, that were once AI free, are part of the flood.
If using AI is a normal practice, especially for a hobby project, then why hide it?

Unfortunately, there probably is a lot of overlap between what interests most AI people (what if one thing that already exists was mashed with another thing that already exists?) and the concept of a decomp / recomp (what if a Nintendo game was a PC game?). And since the former group is, apparently, enormous, and their output hasty as shit, they seem to have consumed all oxygen in this area very fast.

disrespectfully, fuck you.
this attitude is why we need to push back AI shittifying codebases. CODING IS ART.

Foolish

Speaking as someone who doesn't work in gaming specifically but does code, the problem with AI (outside of the ethics) is that it fundamentally lowers the bar. Sure, you always had programmers who were copy-pasting from Slack Overflow and calling it a day, but at least that requires a level of thought to put it together into something workable and if it was bad it was blindingly obvious so you didn't have to waste your time. Now you'll have people throwing overly verbose code into a PR that works, but is often inefficient, redundant, or missing something. Then when you ask them to fix it, they have no idea how, they just run it through AI again. You can't keep pushing back forever, because eventually projects need to complete, and these inefficiencies build up. And this is in a professional space, where you at least have people who have some baseline. In a hobbyist space open to everyone, it is probably a constant dump of absolute trash.

Mhm, I just wanted to inform as many people who don't have AI muted on ResetEra(which I get if someone has it muted) as much as possible. Especially with the OP of the Decompilation OT not wanting AI projects to be mentioned in any way, shape, or form there(which while I get it, I disagree with it because I believe there should be a thread for this info to be available & discuss new findings & stiff, but that's the OP's wish. Though those projects still get mentioned there
)

A lot of the time it does because it's unoptimized or poorly done

Yeah, & it fucking sucks. As someone who is vehemently anti-AI, seeing so many of these projects get infected with it has made me doubt EVERY one of these projects going forward unless they explicitly mention no AI use or are like me & vehemently against AI. My gut says most(if not all) people using AI slop code for these things are impatient & want this stuff done & out now(especially for potential internet cred &/or)money
Guess I can stop recommending Ship of Harkinian to people then.
I'm still waiting for OoT Recomp. The MM one is really great, doesn't use AI, and it has community mods (which are much more extensive than just model replacement mods)
Couldn't really care less given they're not working for profit, and most people using it will be engaging in piracy anyway. Seems a bit holier than though to complain about stolen assets while using a stolen ROM.
99 percent of people who'd be interested in this project have a legal rom of this game purchased (probably multiple times over)
Talk about holier than thou
I hate to ask since it's not direclty related to this thread, but does anyone know if the Twilight Princess PC port has any such AI elements in it?

I'm shocked OoT doesn't have a recomp PC port
Way to ruin such a good thing. OOT was running great on PC last time I checked, it didn't even need all this shit. Now we're stuck with a broken vibed coded slop version unless you find an older version. Sigh...
