Forget the quiet chessboard and the usual battle of wits. Chase the King brings candlelit halls, ruined cathedrals, and a darker atmosphere to the age-old game of chess. Strategic Entertainment has announced that its gothic fantasy chess game will launch on Steam on November 20, 2026, for $5.99, with a free demo also on the way.

But don’t expect an easy ride. Chase The King features a ranked leaderboard with difficulty reaching Grandmaster-level play at 3200+ Elo. Every move counts, and building your army means taking on opponents in one-on-one matches. It’s chess as we know it, just with a much darker atmosphere.

Beyond its moody presentation, Chase The King lets players collect and customize chess pieces, boards, and backgrounds. These cosmetics won’t affect gameplay, so there’s no need to worry about flashy pieces giving anyone an unfair advantage. Your strategy still does the talking.

The game is also the first solo-developed title for Strategic Entertainment’s founder Erik Reynolds. Alongside developing original games, Reynolds plans to continue supporting other creators and working on AI-focused software projects.

Reynolds has also been upfront about the game’s development. Some starting pieces come from the Chess Game Creator plugin, while new pieces will be sculpted in Blender. The current backgrounds use generative AI, but the long-term plan is to introduce 100 human-made backgrounds. Selected community submissions could earn $100 each, depending on available revenue.

Chess doesn’t exactly need a makeover, but there’s something fun about seeing such a familiar game take on a gothic fantasy identity. If the atmosphere and challenging matches come together as planned, Chase The King could be a fun little surprise for fans when it arrives this November.
