If you've ever played a Rockstar game and wondered how on earth someone thought to include such a ridiculously specific detail, here's your answer: sometimes, it's because a developer simply thought it would be cool – and even their colleagues have no idea they put it there!

From the way flip-flops actually bend and slap against a character's heel as they walk in GTA 5 to horse testicles reacting to the cold in Red Dead Redemption 2, the studio’s attention to detail has become one of its biggest trademarks. Now, an interesting behind-the-scenes detail about how this approach works has been revealed.

A Curious Glimpse Behind the Scenes of GTA 6

Turns Out Even GTA 6s Devs Dont Know Everything Thats in the Game 1

In a video shared on his personal YouTube channel, journalist Jason Schreier discussed the scale of GTA 6, revealing that Aaron Garbut, co-studio head of Rockstar North and a longtime art director who has worked on every major 3D and HD entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, explained that no single person has the entire game mapped out in their head.

“There’s no one person who has this whole thing in their head,” Garbut said. “Grand Theft Auto 6 is a humongous game, like Rockstar’s previous games, and I imagine that not even the top developers of this company know every single thing that's in the game.”

Yes, you're not alone if you find that pretty wild to hear for the first time. However, Schreier went into the reasons behind this after visiting Rockstar in person to check out how GTA 6 is being built – and it actually makes quite a bit of sense! Basically, according to the journalist, Rockstar seems to give individual developers some autonomy to introduce details, features, and other elements they personally find interesting. So, unlike other triple-A open-world projects where every little detail is meticulously planned out, employees can sometimes take the initiative and bring their own ideas to life.

Schreier himself used the horse testicles in Red Dead Redemption 2 as an example. This wasn't some grand feature conceived during a meeting between Rockstar's executives, but rather the kind of detail that an individual developer decided to implement because they thought it would be cool and had enough time to work on it. It's a pretty amusing example, but it also offers a glimpse into Rockstar's creative process: when developers have room to experiment, even the tiniest ideas can become part of a much larger game. And that approach could make GTA 6 particularly interesting to explore!

Additionally, there's another interesting tidbit from Schreier's video that fans of the franchise might appreciate: GTA 6 nearly did away with one of the series' most recognizable gameplay features, its weapon wheel.

According to Schreier, Rockstar spent years prototyping alternatives to the classic weapon-selection system before eventually returning to the original design for the final game. It's a reminder that even familiar mechanics aren't necessarily safe from experimentation during development, particularly when a studio has more than a decade to rethink how its next major release should play.

For now, the weapon wheel appears to have survived the process, and fans will have to wait to see what other changes Rockstar considered along the way. Between the game's lengthy development, its enormous team, and the freedom given to individual developers to add their own ideas, GTA 6 could end up hiding plenty of surprises that even the people who helped create it might not know about.
