I have no illusions about being very productive for the rest of the month, and I squarely blame Marek Rabas and his gang of Czech tech wizards and artists.

Update 0.5 Rogue Ops for Gray Zone Warfare becomes available to owners of the Supporter Edition today, and to call it transformative is selling the thing short. The full version drops on October 22, but until then, here are some first impressions and insights from the team at MADFINGER.

Instead of boring you with the patch notes, I think it’s important to talk about how Rogue Ops feels, rather than a bullet-point list of what’s in it. If you want an exhaustive list of what’s coming to patch 0.5 of Gray Zone Warfare, we’ve covered that here, with a separate look into what weapons you can expect.

The End of ‘Murder Simulator’

The Hideout is easily the biggest change to the game, not because of what it is but because of what it enables. The new rogue ops you can run for certain traders pay well enough to make you never want to complete a task for Handshake again, but it’s a high-risk, high-reward kind of deal that makes the game have a purpose.

According to director Marek Rabas, although the game had plenty for you to do in update 0.4, it was what he describes as a “murder simulator” without the pathways to uncovering the mysteries of Ground Zero.

Update 0.5 won’t send you into the radioactive depths just yet, but the Hideout and its facilities, on top of being very lucrative (if legally objectionable), will be key to both entering the zone and researching what you find there.

The Hideout also adds purpose to the ton of random loot you find around the island beyond just selling it for $100 to vendors, and the game now encourages exploring with a goal rather than bouncing around the jungle shooting strangers for sport. That’s what Hunter’s Paradise is for, not Gray Zone Warfare as a whole.

Gray Economics

Gray Zone Warfare Rogue Ops 08

A lot of things you bring back can be used to craft new items, or as a source of materials for useful stuff. As explained by comms man and owner of one too many cool T-shirts Jakub Vambersky, looting and its consequences “will go beyond the money now.”

This update currently caps the Hideout facilities at level 3, with levels 4 and 5 coming in future updates. Rabas explains that, because the Hideout adds so many new ways to make money, the economy had to be rebalanced.

Farming trader rep is no longer a basically required chore as before, and a big part of that is because a lot of weapons (including most new ones bar the Glock 18C and the Benelli M4) and attachments are gone from storefronts. If you are down bad for a gun, you’ll need to work out who usually carries it and either ask politely or medically retire its owner.

Gray Zone Warfare Rogue Ops 12

Initially, I was apprehensive about this, but Vulture being a regular trader more than compensates for that. Weapons carried by PMCs that buy the farm can be bought from him. I was both relieved and revolted to find my FAMAS build there two days after losing it on the field. I was sorry for letting mon clairon down like that, but I’m not the only one who owes the FAMAS an apology.

Vambersky took this chance to clarify his deep regret at calling it a “low-tier rifle,” and explained it was only meant as that in-game because, in real life, it is the “best rifle in the world.” This statement was not made under duress.

Good Merc, Bad Merc

Gray Zone Warfare Rogue Ops 01

Marek Rabas divides the paths you can take in the game now as “the evil way” and “the saints’ one.” The distinction often feels blurry, especially since a lot of the items required to help people or kill them are one and the same in the case of Vulture and Lab Rat.

Vulture is an honest man who likes to send his operatives on drug runs where he doesn’t bribe gangs nearby. I almost lost a $90,000 contract for a dead drop because the route I planned sent me straight into a populated camp. By the time I made it, I was down to a single pistol magazine and next to no medical items.

If you are down bad for a gun, you’ll need to work out who usually carries it and either ask politely or medically retire its owner.

Accepting such a contract triggers a counter-smuggling operation by Banshee, but all you learn there is which region the drop is being made in, so it’s an actual hunt instead of just camping one spot. I never managed to catch anyone with the ‘fun’ backpack on, but it’s nice to have an actual PvP objective instead of killing people to clean up one more room in Fort Narith.

What’s interesting is that the same base compounds you can give Vulture to make drugs can also be processed into medicine. With the help of some considerable corruption, Lab Rat can turn you into a small pharma company supplying local hospitals and aid stations, which feels a lot more wholesome, but is less exciting.

Humans of Lamang

Gray Zone Warfare Rogue Ops 06

It might not be as flashy as the Hideout and the tasks that come with it, but what impressed me the most about the update was actually the ‘Living World’, as Rabas calls it.

To put it simply, the AI in Gray Zone Warfare can get bored, and boredom often kills. My first encounter with it was walking around aimlessly in the dark after I forgot to take night vision goggles and thought I’d be back before sunset. With no way to spot enemies, courtesy of a weapon that also had no flashlight, I thought I was done for until I saw a little flash to my right.

An LLA sentry, about 30 meters away from me, lit himself a cigarette. The lighter flame was only visible for a couple of seconds, but it was enough to doom this poor guy and save me in the process.

Phones have also been quite deadly, regardless of the time of day. A phone screen is like a beacon in the dark, and I’ve also been alerted about enemies nearby because they pulled their smartphone out and started yapping.

When they’re not on alert, enemies even put their guns down and relax, so you get a clearer idea of what their state is.

New Areas Make Old Ones Feel Good Again

The Lamang military AI is the centerpiece of the three new major points of interest on the map. The radio telescope, military base, and asylum have plenty of flavor on their own, and I won’t spoil much here other than to say the latter is the scariest experience I’ve had in a shooter in a long time. For all their strengths alone, what I liked the most about these areas is that they help rebalance previous hotspots.

One of my biggest issues with PvP in Gray Zone Warfare was that certain areas, the Midnight Sapphire resort in particular, have become glorified Counter-Strike maps. By adding more interesting places for players to raid, MADFINGER has eased the pressure on older POIs, so you can actually stop to smell the flowers and get a quest or two done in there without having to bring a four-man team.

The map changes have also triggered a major rebalancing of combat outposts. The big COPs, which were real fortresses that invited PvP, no longer exist. The locations of many COPs have also been changed to make them work as actual outposts rather than quick respawn points that you can use to sprint into the same fight over and over again.

I asked Marek Rabas about how much work is involved in moving detailed areas around, and though we didn’t have much time to discuss it, he explained that MADFINGER “can edit terrain like that really fast” thanks to the Skalla tech.

Vambersky is right to say they “need to brag about Skalla in the future.” Until then, I’ll be busy trying not to lose a backpack full of drugs in the jungle.

Gray Zone Warfare is available on PC via Steam in early access. Update 0.5 Rogue Ops is now accessible to owners of the Supporter Edition, with full release coming on October 22.
