Sony has agreed to transfer 419 global VR patents to Meta, with 180 patents filed in the US under an agreement signed in December 2025.

As reported by ZDNet Korea (via Digital Foundry), the remainder have been filed in Japan, China, Korea, Europe, and other regions.

Between June and September this year, Sony moved more than 40 of these patents to Meta, which covered virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, and head-mounted display systems.

Sony launched its latest VR headset, the PSVR 2, in February 2023 at a RRP of $549.99. The PSVR 2 is also sold in a bundle with Guerrilla Games' Horizon Call of the Mountain for $599.99.

Horizon Call of the Mountain was one of two major first-party titles Sony published on the PSVR 2, alongside First Contact Entertainment's Firewall Ultra.

The PSVR 2 moved 600,000 units in the six weeks after its launch, outpacing the original PSVR headset. The PSVR 2 received PC support in 2024 with an adapter.

Sony's decision to seemingly wind down its VR efforts comes as the firm chose to skip the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) next year for the first time since the event began in 1967.

Sony said its decision to skip the event reflected its focus on "entertainment, intellectual property, and technology geared to support creators."

As for Meta, it recently announced its move from VR headsets to VR Glasses, set to launch in Spring 2027 at $1,299.99 and will have Unity support from day one.

Despite investing in new VR technology, Meta's VR/AR Reality Labs division has faced major losses over the past three years, losing $19.2 billion in FY25.

Earlier this year, it reduced the division by 10% and closed three VR studios, including Twisted Pixel Games, Sanzaru Games, and Armature Studio.

Reality Labs also saw further layoffs in March, as well as the discontinuation of its Metaverse platform Quest VR as it shifts focus to mobile.
