Xbox has been making a ton of changes under its new CEO Asha Sharma, ranging from cosmetic improvements to more substantive changes. Following the recent announcement of their new Xbox XP initiative, Sharma has now unveiled yet another new division: Xbox Labs – “whose job is to turn emerging ideas into things our players and developers can experience.”

Taking to the Xbox Wire blog to make the announcement, CEO Asha Sharma officially unveiled the console-maker’s latest initiative: Xbox Labs. While much of its messaging revolves around the history of Xbox and the industry as a whole, Sharma did offer some details as to what this new division will be responsible for, writing:

“I’ve asked Scott to stand-up XBOX LABS, a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists whose job is to turn emerging ideas into things our players and developers can experience. We’ll build in the open, learn from what people do, and measure success by whether more people are playing and creating.”

This new initiative seems to have come as a direct result of the recent influx in video game decompilation / recomp projects which have emerged over the recent months (owing to the proliferation of AI-based ‘vibe-coding’), with Sharma claiming:

“These experiments challenge long-held assumptions about our industry: the tether between software and hardware, the boundary between creation and play, and how people discover and experience games. While it is hard to predict the future of gaming, it is easy to see the possibilities in making great games easier to access, giving old games new life and allowing more players to become creators and co-creators. These are unmistakably good outcomes for players, even when (and sometimes because) they challenge our existing business models.”

Xbox Labs

As of now, no specifics were shared regarding exactly what Xbox Labs will be tasked with. That said, it appears as though the division is designed to experiment with AI-based coding in order to “explore these possibilities” – whatever that winds up meaning.

Seemingly in its early stages, those interested in learning more about Xbox Labs can sign up for updates via their newly-launched website. Currently, the site includes little more than a collection of crunchy video game footage which players can adjust by adding a CRT filter (among a few other options).

Under Asha Sharma, Xbox has been quite reactive, switching pre-established plans at the last-minute while announcing a bunch of new initiatives across multiple fronts. Whether anything will come from this new Labs Division remains to be seen.

KitGuru says: What do you think of all of Xbox’s new initiatives? Is the console maker being too reactive to the current state of the industry? What are your thoughts on vibe-coding in gaming? Let us know down below.
