《Peak》开发者解释游戏主机版 9.99 美元定价

Peak developer can explain the game’s console price

Back in January, I shared a great quote from Nick Kaman, one of the developers of 2025 indie, mountain-climbing multiplayer hit Peak.

Kaman had told me why he and his colleagues had decided to price their PC game for $8 and launch it on sale for $5.

This is what he’d told me for that piece:

“We had this joke of, like, how much is a game really?

“In a player’s mind, what does it mean to spend five bucks? Well, that’s five bucks. But six bucks? Well, that’s still five bucks.

“Four bucks is also kind of five bucks. Three bucks is two bucks. And two bucks is basically free.

“So we’ve got these tiers: You know, twelve bucks… that’s ten bucks. But thirteen bucks is fifteen bucks.

“And we found that eight bucks is still five bucks. It doesn’t become ten bucks. Seven ninety nine, that’s five bucks, right?

“So, eight bucks going to five bucks is the biggest differential we could find in pricing, so we found it very optimal.”

I was thinking about Kaman’s quote last week, when I saw the news that Peak would be launching soon (today, in fact) on consoles as a $9.99 digital download. Ten bucks!

I reached out to Kaman, because I needed him to explain this price to me.

Was Peak’s digital console price of $10 somehow basically the same as the PC version’s $8 (which, remember, Kaman considers to be equivalent to $5)?

Kaman’s response:

“Unfortunately, Stephen, 10 bucks is 10 bucks.

“But, since launch, we’ve doubled the amount of content in the game, which necessitates that we double the perceived cost of the game from 5 bucks to 10 bucks, even though the game price for consoles is only literally going up by 2 bucks.

“If we were really smart we’d go to 12 bucks which is basically 10 bucks, but we decided to have mercy.”

That doubling of content Kaman is referring to is the addition of several new biomes to Peak’s climbable regions and new quality of life features.

A little more context: Peak was co-developed by a small team spanning Kaman’s studio Aggro Crab and the studio Landfall. As my January story explained, Kaman’s side of the team had been inspired by Landfall’s success with the frantic 2024 co-op horror game Content Warning and joined them to make the similarly slapstick Peak. Content Warning had launched on PC for $0 on its first day, then cost $8 afterward. Two years later, on April 1 of this year, Content Warning debuted on consoles where it sells digitally for… $10.

As for Peak, a $20 physical PS5 version is set to launch in December. It’ll include a disc, stickers, a “scout passport” and an additional code for the game for a co-op friend. That price, taking into account all those physical items is, likely, a whole other story.

Item 2: In brief…

🇺🇸 The PlayStation 5 was the top-selling console in the U.S. in September, topping the Switch 2 after the latter got a price hike, according to research firm Circana.

  • The top-selling premium game of the month, by dollars, was Sony’s PS5-exclusive Marvel’s Wolverine. [Read the Game File review]

  • On social media, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella noted the rising cost that people are paying for consoles, due to price increases in the past year.

    • He said that the average price that a consumer in the U.S. spent on a PS5 in September 2026 was $646, compared to $551 a year ago.

    • Xbox saw a similar split ($663 this September vs. $497 last September).

    • For Switch 2, thanks to a mix of price hikes and software bundles, the increase was smaller: $498 this year vs. $486 the year before.

🎮 Microsoft had targeted 4.3% growth in its Xbox content and services revenue for the 12 months ending June 30, 2026, for a a performance goal tied to a small portion of its top executives’ compensation. But that Xbox revenue instead declined by 6.0% for the year.

  • That’s according to Microsoft’s latest annual proxy filing to shareholders, issued on Wednesday.

  • Executive compensation targets are not the same as the company’s actual business targets. But the miss is a sign of how far Microsoft’s gaming division had strayed from expectations.

  • Microsoft’s CEO and other top named executives have had one Xbox-related performance goal as part of their pay package since 2020. For a few years, Microsoft’s executive compensation targets had been tied to Game Pass subscriber growth, before the target metric was switched in 2023 to growth in Xbox content and services revenue.

  • This year’s miss of an Xbox-related pay target for Microsoft’s top execs was the fifth miss in six years.

👀 Gears of War: E-Day’s budget was $500 million, Kotaku reports. The Xbox/PC-exclusive game from Microsoft-owned studio The Coalition was released earlier this month. [Read Game File’s review]

  • The budget would require a breakout performance to recoup—a longshot based on early sales estimates—and is one of the highest reported for a game.

  • But it’s not the highest. In early 2025, Game File reported that Activision revealed the development budgets of multiple Call of Duty games in court filings tied to a lawsuit. The cost for 2020’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War: $700 million, across the game’s lifespan. The game, which retailed for $60-$70, sold some 30 million copies.

☁️ The new pricing for Xbox’s cloud gaming program has been revealed. For members of its Insiders program, Microsoft is testing bundles of 10 hours for $3.99, 25 hours for $7.99, and 50 hours for $11.99.

  • Microsoft’s new cloud gaming plan initially offers Game Pass subscribers five, 10 or 15 hours of cloud-based play, depending on subscription tier. (Microsoft is also offering a no-Game-Pass ad-supported version of cloud gaming)

  • The new multi-hour bundles would be in addition to those monthly allotments, and they don’t expire at the end of the month.

  • Microsoft previously did not cap the amount of cloud gaming time that Game Pass subscribers could use. Its new model charges for heavy usage. It’s a revised deal at a time when rising console costs make buying a new $400-$800 console more daunting and playing via a streamed cloud connection potentially more economically attractive—so long as the players’ internet is good enough to maintain a stable stream.

💡 Riders Republic, Ubisoft’s live-service extreme sports game, will be getting an offline mode in its forthcoming sixth year of content updates, the company said.

  • Obscure as that detail may be, Ubisoft has taken heat in recent years over the risk that its online-only games that players paid for can go inert when the servers are turned off. Criticism of Ubisoft over that issue prompted “Stop Killing Games” activism and fueled digital ownership rights legislation.

  • In 2024, Ubisoft began adding offline modes to its newer The Crew racing games. Such modes allow big portion of those games to function even once Ubisoft turns off their servers.

  • An offline mode is also essential to make a game viable for portable play, away from an internet connection. Riders Republic is launching on Switch 2 on December 9, alongside the offline mode for all platforms.

🙁 Developers at the now-shuttered BioWare studio had been developing a game called Mass Effect Universe. Its trailer, which leaked today, looked terrific.
