9/10 - Console Creatures
Gears of War: E-Day feels like the first true Coalition Gears of War game. It's a shift away from Gears 4 and Gears 5, and it feels like the game the studio genuinely wanted to make, capturing what made the original trilogy special while finally pushing the series forward in its own way.
90/100 - Voxel
Gears of War: E-Day hits the mark by getting the basics right: embracing its identity as a Gears of War game and elevating the strengths inherent to the series. The game doesn't revolutionize the genre, but it delivers a fun gameplay experience featuring a cinematic narrative and local multiplayer support.
GameKult - 5/10
There's no point pretending otherwise: we're living in a post-Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 world. Up against the brutal generosity of its direct heir, Gears of War: E-Day simply doesn't measure up. And it would be a lie to say my feelings didn't turn from disappointment to anger over these 14 hours of play.
VGC - 4/5
Gears of War E-Day's campaign offers balls-to-the-wall action and rarely lets up, but that means the story takes more of a back seat than I'd like. It's good that time is given to the backstories of new protagonists Mags and Lucas, but given that the game is literally the playable Marcus and Dom backstory fans have been waiting decades to see
Slant Magazine - 4/5
As a prequel, the fates of these characters are already sealed, but E-Day's focus goes beyond shallow narrative concerns: As monstrous as the Locust are, Bravo Squad is constantly confronted by bureaucratic antagonists whose mishandling of the disaster and evacuation has horrific results
ButWhyTho - 9.5/10
The open-area elements are also a great addition that breaks up the linearity of most levels by giving you player agency in how you help those around you. Every COG is a beacon of hope when everything seems lost in seconds. The Coalition has carried the torch of the Gears franchise wonderfully, and taking us back to where it all began was clearly the right call to make it shine brighter.
PostMode - 8/10
Gears of War: E-Day is the best Gears since 3, a gorgeous, gory spectacle with real heart, but dull open districts and repetition keep it short of being this series' Halo Reach.
Meristation - 9/10
Gears of War: E-Day is a triumphant return for the saga, and its campaign mode has become one of our favorites in the series. It features the largest bestiary and arsenal, the best bosses, a surprisingly good story, and a good handful of memorable moments.
DailyStar - 4.5/5
Overall, this is an excellent return to the Gears of War franchise, with well designed, detailed levels an an emotion-packed action storyline as good as a movie.
RegionFree - 4/5
The action is fun, the production quality immaculate, and it plays to the tune of my nostalgia. It's hard to be unmoved by something that tries this hard to recapture something good, even if it's neither new nor inventive. It is Gears of War, and that's enough, especially if this is goodbye.

Back to 88 on opencritic, I see.
I think it'll settle at 86-87, which is in line with post-Epic entries, even a bit better.
That's great in my mind.

Are these all just campaign reviews?
Jeff Gerstmann said on his impressions that "it'll be interesting to see who publishes reviews tomorrow when the full game wasn't given out".
Oh much much better than expected, happy for the studio!
This is geniunely exciting
Will probably settle somewhere around 84/85/86 when all said and done. Quite good
My honest reaction reading these reviews:
Woooo, happy to see it! Will try to jump into campaign today.

The more fan centric sites are posting full reviews, the large sites are "in progress".

Yup, No MP was available for review
The king of third-person shooters is back ![]()
very happy for the coalition, hope this helps protect them as much as possible from everything else going on at MS right now

Seems like it. Most of the big outlets have reviews in progress

yes, just campaign. a lot of people played the online since we had an open beta, though.

Has seen more 10s than EA ever will
Gears tickles a part of my brain, pre-ordered last night cause I knew I was gonna be playing multiplayer anyway but good to see reviews are doing damn fine.

We deserved a good gears game, that team did a real killer job it seems
Why the fuck is Gamekult just directly comparing it to a game that took inspiration from gears itself lmao
Games can be good in their own right bro, not everything has to be compared like that and to that degree
Looked good from the first reveal. Most I've been interested in Gears in a long time.
Yup, No MP was available for review
I think considering there's a veeeeerrrry large group of people that never touch the multiplayer even a little for Gears, it's fair to release a campaign only review. As long as that's clearly marked.
Great scores! It's next to impossible to get past 90 without a dozen plus 10/10s and only at most a couple scores under 7, so that was never going to happen, but man really glad to see critics resonating so well with the game.
Great reviews.
But putting a score on half the package that people will purchase is just fucking insane.
Also a disservice to the devs who put the complete package together.
And Im not blaming the reviewers, Im blaming the publisher and marketing.
Looks like it's going to be hard for games to get a 90 now looks like looks like this year's been the reign of the 87 to 89 I was close I put 84 to 86%

very dumb dumb. space marine 2 is a very different beast (and has a worse campaign).
Wasn't going to upgrade for early access but having an extra weekend with it..... hm....
Massive scores. I'm not really a Gears person myself, but I know a few people that are gonna be hyped seeing this.

Honestly it's probably better to wait for multiplayer it's a very hardcore segment PvP so maybe I don't know
I'm honestly very surprised this seems to have turned out well. If you'd told me a few years ago that Wolverine would be bad and E-Day would be good I would NEVER have believed you. Good job to the team behind it/
Guess I'm pulling the trigger on the premium edition.

I am not even sure in what way they see similarities... Execution of enemies and being third person shooters?
What a weird comparison.

Are we, tho?
Hell yeah, that's a good start.
Also, a few of these quote selections are... "entertaining" lol
Great day to be a 360 Unc (me)
87 so far, great to see it scoring so well!
This is the kind of 'complete' game Xbox needs to invest more in. A full Campaign with a MP suite and Horde. And no live-service battle pass garbage. Feels like a 360-era game again.

Coalition are GOATED.
MP will almost certainly push up those scores. Another GOTY contender.
its too early to call the final score, theres too few reviews and a lot of the big outlets have only done a review in progress.
Well if these are the reviews for the campaign, then it bodes pretty well for the game itself considering the multiplayer is the best part of Gears and the campaign usually gets the bulk of the criticism.
Higher than I expected! This was on my "wait for later" list, but I may prioritize it a bit more.
I've been having a lot of fun with this one. It feels like the vision from Gears 1, modernized and at the same time still very tailored to people who enjoyed the original back in the day. The action's weighty, the setpieces bombastic and the slower exploration levels actually make for a nice break.
I won't say it's perfect: I'm a bit lukewarm on the whole weapon upgrading system, and the boss battles are a bit underwhelming. But all in all, this is the most fun I've had with a Gears game since 2008.
I haven't scored my review in progress yet, but the campaign alone definitely gets an 85, maybe even 90.

Honestly I don't know why some of the people are thinking it was going to be bad it's just some people personally I think it was going to score mid 80s and it looks like I'm correct
LFG! The reveal looked amazing, and it's the game that's nudged me to get another Xbox, the 360 nostalgia!
Whole lotta bangers this year. Great scores
