Cult of the Damned

Dynamic Necromancy Engine

Created by Gh0stRav3n

Hey everyone! I’ve been working on a complete overhaul of the Necromancy and resource mechanics for Warcraft III. I always felt like standard WC3 necromancy was way too passive—you just spam "Raise Dead" and get identical skeletons every time. Furthermore, watching the undead harvest wood like normal peasants never felt quite right.

I built the Cult of the Damned Engine to fix all of that. It turns the Undead into a dynamic, tactical, and resource-driven faction. Every corpse matters, every unit has its place, and your cultists rip the literal life out of the forest to fuel your war machine.

❖ Core Faction Mechanics ❖

1. Adaptive Necromancy & Caster Limits
Instead of raising generic Skeleton Warriors, the engine scans the exact corpse you target and resurrects a specific, lore-accurate unit based on the fallen race or unit type:

  • Human Corpses ➔ Yields Graveguards
  • Orc Corpses ➔ Yields Rotjaw Crushers
  • Night Elf Corpses ➔ Yields Ghoulshot Archers
  • Giant/Massive Corpses ➔ Yields giant Plague Hulks

Note on Caster Hierarchies: You can't spam infinite armies. Units have strict control caps based on the caster's rank. A basic Necromancer can only hold 4 Rotlings, while an Arch Necromancer commands up to 8. Raising units also costs Gold, Lumber, and Food, forcing real economic choices mid-battle.

2. Blood-Fueled Exhumation (Grave Digging)
Need a specific elite corpse on demand? You can dig them up yourself!

  • Spend Gold and Lumber to cast a Grave Mound anywhere on the map.
  • The mound slowly digs up high-tier corpses (like Knights or Abominations) over a channeling duration.
  • Carnage Acceleration: Any death within a 600 radius of an active Grave Mound shaves 4 seconds off the timer! Spilling blood nearby speeds up your exhumation significantly.

3. Blight Dependence & The Vile Flask
Your forces thrive in decay but physically rot away when far from home:

  • Vigor Buff: Cult units standing on Blight gain increased combat effectiveness and sustain.
  • Rot Debuff: Cult units off Blight lose 3 HP per second as their bodies decay.
  • Vile Flask: Need to launch an offensive across unblighted land? Shatter a Vile Flask to create a temporary 600-radius Blight zone for 30 seconds to support your troops on the move.

4. Dark Harvest (Life-Force Lumber Engine)
The Cult does not chop wood. They extract the life force of the forest itself using dark magic.

  • Channeling the Harvest: Select your Cultists and Right-Click on your active Harvest Tower. They will automatically walk over, snap into a ritualistic formation, and begin channeling.
  • Sapping the Woods: As they channel, the tower zaps nearby trees (within 800 range) with crimson lightning, ripping lumber directly from the environment.
  • Scaling Efficiency: Up to 3 Cultists can attach to a single tower. The more cultists channeling, the faster the tower zaps trees. Beware—the targeted trees physically take damage and will eventually rot and shatter!

THE CULT'S STRENGTHS:
• Tactical Diversity: You adapt to your opponent's army composition. Slaying an enemy's elite cavalry gives you high-tier corpses to raise.
• Massive Spike Power: Setting up Grave Mounds near choke points lets you turn ongoing battles into rapid, game-ending momentum spikes.
• Worker Safety: Cultists attached to a Harvest Tower are clustered and stationary, making them easier to defend than scattered peasants.

THE CULT'S WEAKNESSES:
• High Micro & Resource Cost: Necromancy is no longer "free value." It requires Gold, Lumber, and active management of caster caps.
• Environmental Depletion: The Dark Harvest engine physically destroys trees. You will eventually clear-cut your own natural defenses.
• Vulnerable Off-Blight: Catching the Cult away from Blight without a Vile Flask ready means their army slowly rots away during combat.

1. Establish Your Economy: Build a Harvest Tower near a dense tree line. Right-click the tower with up to 3 Cultists to begin sapping lumber via the Dark Harvest.
2. Secure Your Land: Expand your Blight quickly. Never send your armies long distances over clean terrain without a Vile Flask ready.
3. Target Priority: Slay high-value targets first during skirmishes so your Necromancers can convert them into heavy front-line hitters.
4. Pre-Dig Before Fights: Set up 1 or 2 Grave Mounds right behind where you expect a fight to break out. As units die in the battle, the graves will open faster, giving you instant elite reinforcements.
5. Watch Caster Limits: Keep an eye on your control capacity and rank up your casters to Arch Necromancers to raise higher-tier creatures.

Written in clean, modular JASS. Fully leakless with O(1) array removals, hashtable cleanup on unit death, dynamic spell-range math, and custom text floating engines.

A quick note on assets & credits: A massive shoutout to Mr.Henci for the beautiful terrain map (Arid Dominion) used as the foundation for this!

As for the custom icons and models, they have been sitting in my local folders for a long time, and I have unfortunately forgotten their original sources. If anyone recognizes these assets and knows the original authors, please mention me in the comments below so I can update the thread and give them the proper credit they deserve!
