Helldivers 2 developer, Arrowhead, has just announced a substantial change to the game's anti-cheat systems: A move away from GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat. The change will take place on October 20, and Arrowhead explained in a recent Steam post that the justification for the switch away from GameGuard comes down to cracking down on cheat mods and implementing additional security tools to "improve game integrity protection."

  • Implementing additional security measures to crack down on recent cheat mods that have been circulating.
  • Transitioning from GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat today, October 20th, with additional security tools in place to enhance its effectiveness and improve game integrity protection.

The studio explains in the post that there has been a notable increase in the number of mods that affect gameplay, including pick-up rates, and "manipulate the war itself, breaking the unfolding story and dragging down innocent players with it." As such, Arrowhead notes that the switch to EAC will specifically impact and break mods that affect other players' gameplay. However, it adds that "some non-malicious cosmetic mods may require updates from their individual creators in order to keep working.

The studio also adds that the switch to EAC will not impact compatibility with the Valve Steam Deck and SteamOS, in general, even though Helldivers 2 will be using EAC's kernel-level anti-cheat. There are also no new hardware requirements, like TPM or secure boot. Arrowhead did not directly mention how account bans would work under the new anti-cheat implementation or if malicious mods would result in account bans.
