Housemarque isn’t finished with Saros just yet, which is great for everyone. As of October 19, 2026, the developer has released the free Saros: Zenith update, bringing with it a substantial amount of new content to its action-packed shooter. Whether you’ve already conquered Carcosa or found yourself struggling with the game’s relentless combat, there’s something here for both newcomers and returning players.

The update introduces a New Game+ mode, a dedicated boss rush challenge, 20 additional gameplay modifiers, and several accessibility improvements. Best of all, everything included in Saros: Zenith is available at no additional cost to existing owners. Yes folks, we’re finally getting that boss rush mode.

New Game+ Brings Even More Challenges to Saros

Saros Always On The Move

One of the biggest additions is Eclipse Layers, the game’s new take on New Game+. After completing the main campaign, players can unlock additional Eclipse Layers through the Armor Matrix in Passage, allowing them to tackle increasingly difficult versions of the game.

However, this isn’t simply a matter of making enemies stronger and calling it a day. Each Eclipse Layer requires players to equip a certain combination of Carcosan Modifiers, with 25 different Trial Modifiers available to choose from. This gives players some freedom in deciding how they want to make their next playthrough more challenging, although certain modifier combinations could make things especially dangerous.

There’s also a new visual reward for anyone willing to push themselves. As players take on more Trial Modifiers, Arjun receives a golden crown that grows more elaborate as the difficulty increases. The crown also plays a role in uncovering 12 new Visions scattered throughout Carcosa, which provide additional story details for those willing to seek them out.

Overlord Rush Lets Players Take on the Toughest Bosses

Saros First Boss - Prophet

For players who enjoy fighting bosses without having to play through the entire game again, Saros: Zenith introduces Overlord Rush. Accessible through the Primary Unit in Passage, this mode puts players into a training simulation where they must defeat a selection of the game’s toughest enemies as quickly as possible.

There are three challenges available, with Incursion and Ascension each featuring three Overlords. These shorter challenges are designed to take approximately 10 minutes, making them ideal for players who want a quick test of their skills. Then there’s Totality, which pits players against all eight Overlords in one continuous gauntlet.

Naturally, there’s also a competitive element. Overlord Rush features online leaderboards, allowing players to compare their completion times with friends and other players worldwide. Results can even be filtered by primary weapon, giving players another reason to experiment with different loadouts and perfect their strategies.

New Accessibility Options Make Saros More Approachable

While Saros is known for its demanding combat and screen-filling projectiles, Housemarque is also looking to make the experience more approachable. One of the most interesting additions is Slow Game Speed, which allows players to reduce the speed of the action without removing incoming projectiles or changing enemy attack patterns.

Players can adjust how much the game slows down and choose whether the feature activates automatically during combat or manually when needed. This gives newcomers more time to recognize incoming attacks and react accordingly, while still allowing them to experience the combat system as intended.

Another welcome addition is Auto-fire, which automatically fires a weapon whenever players aim at an enemy. However, this doesn’t eliminate the need to time reloads correctly, meaning players will still need to master some of the game’s combat mechanics. Motion Sensor Aiming has also been added, giving players another way to customize their controls.

Interestingly enough, this was one of the issues we brought up in our review of Saros. While we praised the game’s combat and progression systems, we also pointed out that it lacked several purpose-built accessibility options, especially compared to other PlayStation first-party titles. It’s good to see Housemarque addressing some of those concerns with this update, giving more players a chance to enjoy what is otherwise an excellent game.

Twenty New Modifiers Give Players More Control

Beyond the new modes and accessibility settings, Saros: Zenith introduces 20 additional Carcosan Modifiers. These are split evenly between 10 Protection Modifiers, designed to make the game more forgiving, and 10 Trial Modifiers, which increase the difficulty.

One example is Corruption Melee Enhancement, which allows players to turn accumulated Corruption into additional melee damage. Normally, Corruption is something players want to avoid because it reduces their maximum Integrity. With this modifier enabled, however, taking that risk can potentially lead to a devastating melee attack.

On the other side is Hostile Regeneration, a Trial Modifier that makes larger enemies regenerate after being stunned. Players must finish these enemies with a melee attack before they recover, forcing a more aggressive approach to combat.

It’s an interesting way to expand the experience without forcing everyone to play the same way. Those struggling with Saros have more ways to make the game manageable, while experienced players can create some truly punishing encounters.

Frankly, it’s good to see that Housemarque is continuing to support Saros, especially with an update that addresses two very different types of players. Those who have already mastered the game now have additional challenges to overcome, while anyone who was previously intimidated by its difficulty has more options to help them get through it.

We were already big fans of Saros when it launched, awarding it a 4.5/5 in The Outerhaven’s review. We praised its fluid combat, improved progression, and fantastic presentation, even calling it Housemarque’s best game to date. With the Zenith update addressing some of the concerns we raised in that review, there’s even more reason to jump into Carcosa, whether you’re experiencing it for the first time or returning for another run.

Now, all we need from Housemarque is some DLC that gives us an endless tower progression mode, similar to the Tower of Sisyphus in Returnal. Give us increasingly difficult floors, tougher enemies, and the chance to see just how far we can push ourselves before everything comes crashing down. Come on, Housemarque, you know we’d be all over that.
