Smashcraft 0.1.0
A platform fighter inside Warcraft III

Pick a Warcraft hero, fight across floating stages and knock your opponents off the screen. Smashcraft is a free fan-made platform fighter, inspired by Super Smash Bros. Melee, built as a custom map for Warcraft III. Jumps, air dodges, shields, hitstun, knockback and stocks, with rollback netcode for online games.

This is the first public version, 0.1.0. It is early: expect rough edges and tell us what feels off. A list of known issues is below.

Best in Classic graphics.

What is in 0.1.0

  • 26 fighters, each with a ground game, aerials, grabs and throws, four specials, EX specials and an ultimate.
  • 10 stages plus Random: Frozen Throne, Nordrassil, Gryphon Aerie, Durotar Skies, Naxxramas, Hellfire Citadel, Blackrock, Ahn'Qiraj, Stratholme and Tomb of Sargeras.
  • 1 to 4 players. Versus matches with stocks or time, an endless option and automatic rematches.
  • Computer opponents: six personalities (Rook, Ember, Flint, Vale, Kite, Wren) at five difficulties, each with its own habits.
  • Training mode with a frame-data readout, hit-area display and slow motion.
  • Classic, a six-fight route ending in a boss, and Lore Battles, story fights against set opponents. (Classic and Lore Battles cover 21 of the 26 fighters in this version.)
  • A super meter: spend it on EX specials, or fill it for your fighter's ultimate.
  • Rebindable keyboard controls, and K saves the last ten seconds of a match for a bug report.

The fighters
Rifleman, Illidan, Blademaster, Muradin Bronzebeard, Maiev Shadowsong, Kel'Thuzad, Forsaken Paladin, Mal'Ganis, Shadow Hunter, Pit Lord, Rexxar, Lich King, Thrall, Jaina Proudmoore, Sylvanas Windrunner, Cairne Bloodhoof, Chen Stormstout, Peon, Goblin Tinker, Kael'thas Sunstrider, Murloc, Grom Hellscream, Kobold, Malfurion Stormrage, Medivh and Anub'arak.

How to play

  1. Download Smashcraft 0.1.0.w3x from this page and put it in your Warcraft III Maps folder.
  2. Start Warcraft III. In the game options set Graphics to Classic and restart the game if you just changed it.
  3. Open Custom Game (or Local Area Network, or Battle.net custom games) and pick Smashcraft 0.1.0. You can play by yourself against computers, on one PC, over a LAN, or in a Battle.net custom game with friends.
  4. Choose your fighter (and a computer opponent if you want one), choose a stage, press Y to start. Nothing else to install.

New here? Place only your own fighter chip and press Y to practice with no timer. Switch the rules to Training for a frame-data readout and a practice partner.

Controls (keyboard)
Press F1 before a match to open Controls, choose QWERTY or Custom, click a key to rebind it and Save. The default (QWERTY) layout:

  • Move: W and R (left and right). Aim up: Space. Crouch, fast-fall, drop through platforms: E
  • Jump: Z or 8. Short hop: I. In the air I uses your second jump
  • Attack: N (with a direction for tilts and smashes). Special: U (with a direction). Grab: O
  • Shield and air dodge: Q, 7 or G. Light shield: A. Walk: hold P
  • Smash in one key: B left, M right, J up, H down
  • EX special: shield + U or X + U, costs one segment of the meter. Ultimate: N + U together at a full meter
  • Pause and confirm menu choices: Y. Save the last ten seconds for a bug report: K

Controllers need a separate helper program that is not part of this download and is not ready for general use yet; play on the keyboard in 0.1.0.

Requirements

  • Warcraft III 3.0, with Graphics set to Classic.
  • A keyboard. About 46 MB of map download.
  • Your own copy of Warcraft III. Smashcraft never replaces the game.

Known issues in 0.1.0
Smashcraft 0.1.0 is the first public version. It is early; these are the things we already know about.
Looks and animation

  • Some special-move effects are still hard to read, for example Lich King's down special and ultimate. Cairne's neutral special has no charge-up effect during its wind-up yet.
  • Forsaken Paladin now uses Warcraft III's own model and sword, but some of his attacks still look rough. A full animation pass is planned for 0.1.1.
  • Thrall's down-special slam has a ground burst but no body animation to go with it yet (planned for 0.1.1).
  • Other attack animations are stiff or twitchy on some fighters, such as Shadow Hunter's forward smash and angled forward tilt, Mal'Ganis, Cairne's normals and Sylvanas's kicks. Ledge-hang, crouch and double-jump poses are not yet distinct for every fighter.
  • Some hit areas do not match the drawn weapon exactly (for example Peon's axe, Chen's staff and Grom), so a hit can land a little short of or past what you see.
  • Dark goo-like spots can appear under your fighter at the start of a match.
  • Murloc's Disease Cloud and a few other effects borrow a look from another unit, and Kobold's Panic Dig draws as a tornado.
  • The losing fighter has no defeated pose on the results screen.

Fighting

  • Balance is a first pass. Not every fighter is in the 45 to 55 percent win-rate band against the others (for example, Maiev Shadowsong is weak and a few fighters win too often).
  • The drawn shield bubble can differ slightly from where hits land, so hits can poke through a shrunken shield. Not every fighter's down special works in the air yet, and full-forward air dodges and quick pivots are not yet tuned to Melee's feel.
  • The game runs at about 59 frames a second rather than a steady 60, and can stutter for a moment when your computer is busy. A fix is planned for 0.1.1.
  • The ultimates of Cairne, Shadow Hunter and Sylvanas, and the Gryphon Aerie moving platform, are first versions and will change in a later update.

Modes and setup

  • Classic and Lore Battles cover 21 of the 26 fighters. Grom Hellscream, Anub'arak, Malfurion, Medivh and Kobold play in every other mode but have no Classic route or Lore Battle yet.
  • Best in Classic graphics: set Graphics to Classic in Warcraft III.
  • Keyboard only. A controller needs a separate helper that is not part of this download and is not ready for general use.
  • Do not restart a match with Ctrl+R or press F5 to return to the menu: they can hang the game. Use New Match after a result, or Warcraft's Quit Mission, and recreate the custom game.
  • Most testing so far was on Linux. The map is plain Warcraft III script, but tell us if anything differs on Windows or macOS.

Found something else? Press K in a match to save its last ten seconds, then report it at Issues · tompassarelli/smashcraft with the fighters, stage and your Warcraft III version.

Feedback
Please tell us what feels off: reply in this thread, or open an issue at Issues · tompassarelli/smashcraft. Say which fighters, which stage and what happened, and attach a clip if you can. Pressing K in a match saves its last ten seconds to smashcraft-repro-*.txt in Warcraft III's CustomMapData folder; attach it to the report.

Fan project and IP statement
Smashcraft is an independent fan game inspired by Super Smash Bros. Melee. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Blizzard Entertainment or Nintendo. It is built with our own code and our own animations on Warcraft III's unit models, alongside the community model credited above, and it plays only inside your own copy of Warcraft III.

  • Respect for copyright: the source repositories contain no extracted Blizzard files, whether models, textures, sounds, data, scripts or in-game text, and contain no Nintendo code or assets. The map uses Warcraft III's own models with animations we authored.
  • Learn by observation: behaviour is measured from the outside, from what Warcraft III shows, plays and writes, and from public documentation. Melee's feel comes from public frame data (SmashWiki, Smashboards) and from watching the game; nothing comes from disassembly, decompilation or reading a game's memory.
  • Play fair: no DRM bypass, no Battle.net emulation, no cheats, and nothing that touches other players or Blizzard's services.
  • Original work: our own code only, released under the MIT License at GitHub - tompassarelli/smashcraft: A Melee-inspired Warcraft III platform fighter. The map is free; there is nothing to buy.
