Valve has finally released the CAD files for its Steam Frame VR headset and VR controllers, officially allowing modders and creators to create and publish their own Steam Frame accessories—as long as they're published under the correct Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike 4.0 International license. The CAD files are published on GitLab, and they include both 3D models and technical drawings and documentation for reference when designing accessories.
The CAD files also include documentation on the electronics of the Steam Frame, including an example project documenting a USB 3.0 expansion port that could be adapted for other electronics projects. While Valve hasn't granted a sweeping explicit license to create commercial projects for the Steam Frame, it notes on the Frame's GitLab repo that "if you wish to pursue a commercial license please reach out to us at steamframecompatible at valvesoftware com," ostensibly opening the door for licensing partnerships.
