OpenPS2BIOS is an open-source PS2 BIOS replacement for emulators

Tamariba Devs have released version 0.2 of OpenPS2BIOS which is an experimental, open-source, full-on replacement BIOS for the PlayStation 2.

It is made for emulators and has been tested in PCSX2 so far. It comes with its own boot screen plus the EE and IOP kernels needed to start PS2 software and contains no Sony firmware or copyrighted/proprietary code at all. The project is also MIT licensed.

Before anyone gets ideas, the README is very clear that this is not for real consoles:

GitHub README said:

For emulator use only. Do not flash or install this BIOS on a real PS2. Real console hardware is unsupported and untested. Installing an experimental BIOS could leave your console unable to boot.

It doesn't set up the memory controller or other hardware that emulators handle themselves, so it simply won't boot on a real PS2 anyway.

There's a compatibility table listing games that reach their main menus, though the developers point out that getting to a menu doesn't mean a game is playable as gameplay, saving, sound and controller support may still likely have problems.

The current known limitations are as follow:

  • The boot screen only starts PS2 discs, with no system menu, memory card browser, or clock and language settings
  • PS1 discs, audio CDs and DVD video aren't supported
  • Modules requested when a game reboots the IOP aren't loaded; built-in replacements stand in, and encrypted (KELF) modules aren't supported
  • Games stop on any system call that isn't implemented yet, so missing features show up as a clear failure rather than a later crash

Prebuilt ROM images are attached to releases on GitHub. Building it yourself needs Clang with the MIPS backend, ld.lld, llvm-objcopy, GNU Make and Python 3.10 or newer, but not the PS2SDK, which the team only used as a reference for system call numbers, module interfaces and data structures.
