Choosing the Right Environment

Before I started developing EXPLOSIVE CHASERS, I spent quite a bit of time thinking about what kind of environment the game should take place in.

Should it be a busy urban environment filled with buildings, trees, and cars?

Or should it be a more minimalistic environment with both trees and buildings, but designed in a way that allows players to escape from the police without constantly worrying about crashing into buildings and other obstacles?

Back in those early days, I spent a lot of time searching for environment assets. Eventually, I found one that was a good fit for the game.

This asset pack included several terrain sections and roads at different elevations, making it a good fit for a game like EXPLOSIVE CHASERS.

Of course, it wasn't perfect. It had a few shortcomings, but thanks to the modeling skills I'd developed, I was able to fix those issues myself.

But enough about that! Let's get to the main topic.

I'm going to show you how I designed the arenas in the game.

Starting with the Ground

First, I create a square piece of terrain with specific dimensions. Here's what it looks like:

The entire surface is covered in grass. Now, the first thing I need to do is remove the parts of the terrain where I want to make changes.

Here, I create three lines across the ground.

I've removed a few grass tiles to create these three lines. You'll see what they're for later.

Right above these three lines, I create another horizontal line.

But I also need one more horizontal line, this time below the three lines in the middle.

There's one more thing I want to add to the map: a really long vertical line on the left side of the arena.

Here's what it looks like:

By now, you're probably wondering why I'm creating all these lines across the ground.

Am I bored?

Do I just enjoy removing tiles to draw lines on the terrain?

Well, no! 😄

Building the Main Road

Let's start with that long vertical line on the left side of the arena.

As you can see, I start filling the empty spaces with road tiles. My goal is to create a long road running from the bottom of the arena all the way to the top.

So, I fill all the empty spaces with road tiles.

Since I placed the tiles from a top-down view, their elevation needs to be adjusted.

As you can see, the tiles are floating above the ground. I select all of them and bring them down to the same level as the terrain.

And there we go! We now have a huge road running from the bottom of the arena to the top.

But why do we need a road like this?

I have no idea! 😄

Remember those two horizontal lines we created near the top and bottom of the arena?

I'm going to use them to build a huge bridge instead of leaving them as simple lines on the ground.

Time to get building!

And here's what we've got so far:

We now have a long road and a long bridge. But that's not enough!

Building Some Ramps

Next, I want to build something that looks more like one giant ramp than a regular road.

Remember those three lines I created in the middle of the map?

I select the short one and start building something inside it.

Pretty nice ramp, isn't it?

Well, let's make an even better one right next to it!

And now we have two awesome ramps! 😊

Building a Massive Elevated Bridge

Now I want to build a really tall bridge, so I move over to the line on the right side of the arena and start building this elevated structure.

Wow, look at that!

Always remember: Rome wasn't built in a day. 😄

Something Is Missing...

At this point, I feel like the arena is missing something.

Yes, I'm sure of it. It needs a hill!

I decide to build the hill in the lower part of the arena, so I make the horizontal section I created near the bottom of the map a little bigger.

Then I start building the hill.

Next, I fill in the inside of the hill.

Here's how I do it:

Now, let's see how the hill turned out!

And here's an angled view of our hill.

And finally, here's the entire arena!

Back to the Game!

Alright, enough building for now! 😊 Let's talk about the game itself.

It's been four days since the release of the Pre-Alpha version, and the response so far has been really positive. I'm very happy to see that!

But there's something even more valuable to me: hearing your feedback about the game.

As I've always said, your feedback plays a huge role in helping me improve EXPLOSIVE CHASERS.

Thank you for playing, sharing your thoughts, and supporting the development of the game.

That's all for now. See you in the next Devlog! 💥
