Game Science, the Chinese studio behind the massively successful Black Myth: Wukong and its upcoming sequel, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, announced it will refrain from using AI “until the end” because of none other than Christopher Nolan.

In a recently translated Q&A caught by GamesRadar, Game Science co-founder and art director Yang Qi shot down all doubts regarding AI usage for the development of Zhong Kui. The main inspiration for this choice? The Odyssey, more specifically Christopher Nolan’s take on it. Qi said, “At a time when digital filmmaking and 3D post-production seem to have reached a dead end, look at Nolan…” and “he’s thriving, using even older techniques to shake things up.”

I’m not familiar with Qi’s game beyond Wukong, but good to see art directors still understand that “old techniques” don’t necessarily equate to tired results, and that Nolan’s painstaking usage of tech from various eras of cinema can actually create mind-blowingly fresh stuff. I hate that meme because it’s so excruciatingly overused, but, yeah, this is absolute cinema.

The usage of genAI, even if just for the creation of video game assets, has been a matter of concern for players for a while now. The resulting “creations” invariably suck, and AI tools rob devs of the chance to actually learn how to create something cool and all the unexpected lessons that come with it. Regardless, a lot of big studios will be using more and more AI tools going forward, so it’s refreshing to see Game Science’s unwavering stance, as well as the awesome reasoning behind that decision.

Though comparatively much more recent, how fitting is it that an adaptation tied to Journey To The West, one of the most influential tales of old, would draw inspiration from the definitive adaptation of an even more influential tale from an even older time?

The notion that there might be no easy way to greatness might prove daunting, but don’t forget that true learning and actual fun can come from a fair challenge we set for ourselves. Though I find Christopher Nolan’s outings hit or miss, there’s no denying the overwhelmingly positive influence the man’s having not just on movies, but on the arts in general. I’d honestly like to hear what the original Odyssey naysayers would say about The Odyssey now that it has gone above and beyond what even most big blockbusters could ever hope to achieve.

There’s still no release date for Black Myth: Zhong Kui, because, in the words of Game Science’s co-founder, “no rush.”

The teaser looks gorgeous, though.
