Nvidia has finally released the full suite of RTX remix as open beta. For those who don't know, it allows people to remaster DX8/9 games (fixed-function pipeline only, so no or only very sparse shader usage) utilizing path tracing. The release includes the previously already available RTX Remix runtime in version 0.4.0 but also the new RTX Remix App which is a streamlined app for asset replacements, AI texture upscaling, relighting and more.

I recommend everyone interested to read the release announcement article as it has a ton of info I couldn't possible all cram in here.

It is available for download via the Omniverse app

NVIDIA RTX Remix enables experienced modders to remaster classic games by upgrading textures with AI, allowing easy replacement of game assets with high fidelity assets built with physically accurate materials, and injecting full ray tracing, DLSS and Reflex technologies.

While Remix makes modding substantially easier, it's not a one-click solution, and requires time and dedication to create amazing mods.

Below, modders will receive a thorough explanation of Remix's capabilities, and we've prepared guides and videos to help modders begin their journey.

Modders can follow these steps to get started:

  1. Install NVIDIA Omniverse Launcher, navigate to the "Exchange" tab, and download RTX Remix on a PC with a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti or higher GPU (see full system requirements). We also recommend installing the latest Game Ready or Studio Ready driver from the Drivers tab of GeForce Experience or GeForce.com.
  2. Visit ModDB's Remix community resources, choose your compatible game, download its rtx.conf configuration file, and drop the latest RTX Remix runtime and rtx.conf file next to the game's executable file.
  3. You can skip this step if you were able to acquire a rtx.conf file from the previous step: Launch the game and hit Alt+X to open the RTX Remix Runtime menu. Follow the setup process in the "game setup" tab of the Advanced Developer Menu.
  4. Take a capture of the game via the enhancements tab of the RTX Remix Runtime menu. ModDB's Remix community resources also enable modders to upload captures for games, allowing you to forgo taking your own capture - just download someone else's capture and load it into RTX Remix!
  5. Start creating your RTX mod. To help, we've created a set of resources including a full Remix documentation guide, a crash course tutorial video on the remastering process, and RTX Remix sample application. Additionally, check out the RTX Remix Showcase Discord to get advice.
  6. Send us your feedback by filing an issue on our GitHub. This is a beta - if you find bugs or have feature requests, we want to hear about them!

Mods can be hosted on ModDB. They also have a detailed game compatibility list.

ModDB has added a new RTX Remix section, making discovery, modding and sharing of classic game mods even easier. The new section features:

  • A compatibility list to track which classic games the community has found work best with RTX Remix.
  • 'RTX.conf' configuration files and USD captures for compatible games. These make getting started on modding a game even faster.
  • 50GB mod upload size for RTX Mods - no other site allows modders to upload mods as large.
  • Easy tags across the site to find RTX Mods and related news.
  • A community repository of PBR assets and materials that are free to use and contribute to

Head to the new ModDB NVIDIA RTX Remix section to discover everything available.

Here is some footage of the stuff people have been working on:

I personally have been working on Manhunt a bit, here is a comparison:

This is purely light placement so far, without any texture or asset modifications.

I think people are going to be cooking up some crazy stuff with this. We haven't really seen anything yet, imo.

i wonder if you can use it without ray tracing as a glorified replacement for something like tex mod

AngelOFDeath

Oh this is gonna be bonkers.

CGriffiths86

These projects have DLSS/framegen built into them, right? Has anyone tried using the DLSS Framegen to FSR mod for older graphics cards/AMD cards on any of these? I've seen the Max Payne one recommended to me on Youtube a few times.

Owlet

Very cool! Actually just got a new card that will run with this. Excited to check it out.

Tagyhag

My goodness, imagine the completed projects in 5 years.

We are so spoiled lol.

Is it me or Omniverse download button doesn't work

Jubilant Duck

We're going to have to suffer through a lot of artless attempts from the community that degrade the graphics rather than enhance (e.g. the above linked Morrowind example) but I'm excited for the actually talented folks getting their hands on this tech.

I like how the Max Payne and HL2 examples.

GrubChub

Excited to see what people do with this.

In fairness, the Morrowind one was jury-rigged from the version of RTX Remix that was in the first Portal demo, before anyone had access to the tools. It's impressive that it worked at all.

Duffking

can't wait to make all my games look worse in exhange for about 1/10th of the performance

Cocaine Jesus

I've been so hyped for this since it was announced, really excited to experiment with it! I play a lot of older games and always have a great time tweaking them to run at higher resolutions/framerates and injecting more modern visual effects through reshade or what not. This is a very powerful tool that I'm sure people with far more talent than me will create some really cool stuff with, I hope it's accessible enough for a dumbass like me tinker around with as well.

I immediately thought of the original Thief games when it was announced, I would absolutely love to see if it's possible to implement path tracing without fundamentally breaking the light/shadow mechanics. I want to hear what games everyone else would like to see get the remix treatment, I'm sure there are plenty of great candidates I'm not thinking of at the moment

ghostcrew

So excited by that Open Lara footage. It's amazing!

Big Tex

Stupid question - Will these be released as Steam Workshop mods or will they be standalone?

Pocky4Th3Win

How easy is it to share remix mods? Do we expect to see them on nexusmods?

BSherrod

Been in the Discord for RTX Remix for awhile, a complete project with this will take a very long time from what I've seen but it's still very exciting. Every game has presented some big challenges for the modders like anti-culling and other things to trick the original game to play better with Remix. The modders working on COD2 and NFS Underground 2 have impressed me the most.

Killyoh

Hope we'll see it on FF14 to finally have PBR into the game

SliChillax

ModDB is the partner they're pushing, but they also name drop Nexus Mods a bunch in the context of RTX Remix, no reason they won't pop up there as well.

Just tried it out for a bit and it's so much easier to use than the previous manual approach, it's not even funny. Starting from scratch I had most of my lights back in Manhunt in like half an hour. It took a couple of hours of manually configuring stuff, alt-tabbing back into the game, writing down IDs and such before. People who actually know what they are doing are going to do some great things with this.

What

I guess it's jab that most reshade projects have cranked brightness and contrast set to 100% and that's it.

hikarutilmitt

So like, we could potentially properly remaster Arkham asylum and Arkham City (in DX9 mode) to have pathtracing and replace some of the muddy UE3 textures and such........

HMMMMMM

Alric

I'm never gonna get around to newer games cause I'm gonna be replaying older games with this enabled. Can't wait to see some of the results.

HMMMMMM

RTX Remix wouldn't be compatible with those titles due to heavy use of shaders. It only supports games with a fixed-function pipeline for the foreseeable future. Some games with slight shader usage can still be made to work, but for UE3 titles the chances are pretty much zero.

Well shit.

Darksiders and Dishonored I could see looking really good with this. Especially the latter.

RTX Remix and Praydog's UEVR in the same month! What an incredible time to be a PC gamer.

I wonder if someone can RTX Remaster Return to Castle Wolfenstein before that one dude can finish his own separate ray traced project.

Probably not, that was an OpenGL game and this needs the game to be DirectX 9. Perhaps someone makes a wrapper at some point in the future to translate the OpenGL API to DX9, then it could work. It's a shame because the popularity of the id Tech 3 is going to cut out a lot of FPS favourites that would otherwise be potential candidates for this.

Anyway it's still incredibly impressive; even if it doesn't make a game entirely viable to play via it, its utility as as a means to easily explorer assets (and the game worlds via free camera movement) is incredible.

OpenGL is on the roadmap for the devs. I really hope they can get it working, it would really open up a ton of important titles to be path traced.

As you probably saw in our product roadmap, we're also looking at OpenGL.

I guess there is no ETA for OpenGL that you can share right now.

I have nothing to share today, unfortunately.

just_myles

Awesome this is what I want to see!

Is there a list of games being worked on by Modders to get RTX Remix into games?

Duffking

I really don't rate what we've seen so far both in terms of Ray tracing /path tracing mods, or "official" rtx mods.

At best, I find they unavoidably change the atmosphere and intention of the original in a way that is technically impressive but ultimately inferior in terms of visual consistency (stuff like quake 2 rtx). Problem in these cases is just that the original lighting setups and assets weren't set up to take advantage of realistic light propagation, they were set up to work with way more basic stuff. Everything in the scenes composition is based on that, understanding of how light worked at the time the game was made, not how it works in the future.

At worst I just think they look absolutely horrid with ott use of reflections etc.

In fairness the trailer above looks fine, largely because in most of the examples they've obviousky replaced half the assets with brand new ones, which goes beyond just plugging rtx lighting into it. Which is what you need to do really, you have to reimagine things to take advantage of your new lighting model.

The SHAWshank Redemption

Sands of Time trilogy. Me wants it.

dex3108

Sands of Time trilogy. Me wants it.

Apparently it doesn't work. And I tried AC2 for the fun, it loads Remix, it can see textures but you get black screen with some effects working but you can't capture scenes. It's shame because being able to extract textures easily (there is tool for AnvilEngine that can extract them but it is way more comolicsted) would be nice for replacement. Oh well maybe one day Nvidia will find a way to inject it into modern games.

Here's my current progress with Manhunt. I spruced this level up a bit as a showcase of what's possible, although it's obviously still heavily WIP. Culling is a big issue with the game as you can see at the moment, with lights popping in and out of existence constantly. Hoping some modders can help out with this.

As OP pointed out in here, UE3 games aren't compatible, so no Dishonored 1. Not sure about Darksiders, I'm having trouble finding what engine it uses.

Bummer.

Not sure about the remaster, but I think the OG release of Darksiders used the Phoenix engine. Not sure what 2 launched on, 3 was UE4.

I've been staring at Manhunt with RTX Remix for so long that I kinda got used to it and was surprised at how big the difference was when I switched back to the original graphics. That made me want to do a traditional comparison video where I show the switch between the two versions.

Obviously still heavily WIP and the culling issue still hasn't been resolved and probably won't be unless someone with engine knowledge steps up.

The Lord of Cereal

Oh damn. I wonder if someone would be able to get COD 2 working on this… I know it's Id Tech but I'm pretty sure it still supported DX9…

I would have thought a 2008 game like that would be too recent to support Remix.

There are some ways to get even shader-based games going. This involves pretty heavy modding which was done in the case of these CoD games.

For people who are interested in using RTX Remix, this is a pretty good livesteram recording that goes into a bunch of aspects. It also includes a pretty good explanation about why shaders are such an issue for a "remastering engine" like this.

I am just sad that we can't capture just textures for example. When you run Assassin's Creed 2 through RTX Remix it is broken but you can see all textures used in the scene. But because pathtracing doesn't work you can't capture scene. If we could just capture textures it would at least be something and make things easier for some games (AC has a tool to extract all data from .forge archives but it is so convoluted and time consuming that there is no point bothering).

The textures showing up in the menu unfortunately doesn't mean that RTX Remix could replace them. Replacement textures only show up through the RTX Remix renderer, which wouldn't be working if the game is unsupported.

I know, i just wish that there is a way that it works. I tried to look into "remastering" some textures for AC2 with that AnvilToolkit and boy that file structure is kinda nightmare. RTX Remix would really help.
