Readers may remember that, among the many moves by game developers to unionize over the past couple of years, one group of Activision QA workers formed the Activision Quality Assurance United – CWA union, which represents 600 workers for the company across Texas, Minnesota, and California, and was at the time one of the largest such unions ever formed. Since then, the organized devs have been attempting to negotiate with the company for a bargaining contract, and are now moving to strike after years of failed negotiations.

Some of the contract matters the AQAU-CWA union is attempting to guarantee include wage increases, AI guardrails, use of contract labor, and securing working accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Since both sides have not come to an agreement on these matters, the union has authorized to strike, with no date for such action currently set.

“For two years, Activision Publishing has delayed and stalled negotiations rather than doing their duty to bargain in good faith with the dedicated workers who work on profit-shattering titles that the gaming community enjoys dearly,” says CWA District 7 vice president Susie McAllister. “The results of the strike authorization vote send a clear message to Activision management: it is time to stop playing games because our members are united and prepared to do what it takes to win the strong contract they deserve.”

A spokesperson for Activision claims that the company has been trying to negotiate.”Activision has been working in good faith with the CWA for the Central QA team and we have made meaningful progress on a number of issues,” reads a statement provided to Kotaku. “Our goal is a fair first contract that supports our QA team members and the long-term success of the business.”

QA functional tester and bargaining committee member Jenna Huffman argues differently. “Activision’s stalling at the bargaining table shows that they are not the high-road, union-neutral employer they once committed themselves to be and are instead aggressively fighting us in bad faith at the table,” she says. “Our members are tired of the stalling and are prepared to do what needs to be done to secure a fair contract, a fair wage, and fair working conditions for everyone.”
